📋 WBA Activation Report: 161DA/FF2220 – Trzebnica Hills – 1st repeat
- Operator: Sylvester 161DA135
- Activation Date: October 28, 2026
- Reference: 161DA/FF2220 (Trzebnickie Hills Protected Landscape Area)
🚗 Logistical Issues and Police Check
- The activation started with some delay due to Sylvester’s work commitments.
- Upon reaching the site within the protected area, the operator set up the Skypper antenna and started the station, but the operation was immediately interrupted by an unexpected event.
- A forest guard patrol stopped to check the situation.
- The check stemmed from a curious detail: Sylvester’s car was parked entirely on the grass rather than on the roadway.
- The officers proceeded to check documents and authorizations. Fortunately, thanks to the extra documentation Sylvester had with him, the matter was resolved peacefully within about 20 minutes without the need for fines or additional special permits.
📻 Operating Conditions and Propagation
- Once the initial hurdle was cleared, weather conditions were fair (around 12°C and dry weather), but radio propagation presented quite a few difficulties:
- Skypper Antenna Phase: In the first part of the activation, operating with the Skypper directional antenna and reduced power (maximum 80W), incoming signals were very low and stations struggled to break through, making contacts particularly complex due to low power and background noise. However, there was a nice surprise in working the correspondent 43DXR234 Tom, who came through with an exceptional and unexpected signal for those conditions.
- Switch to Mobile Antenna: Seeing the fading light and the progressive worsening of autumn propagation (with fluctuating signals coming and going from Europe), Sylvester decided to move and complete the activation using a mobile antenna (Sirio 5000 / Icom 7000) set up in the open area of the park.
- Goal Achievement: Despite the limitations of a low-power station (around 80W) and the approaching darkness, the mobile session allowed him to accumulate the necessary contacts to surpass the minimum threshold and officially validate the activation, logging valid QSOs starting from number 14 onwards.
🛠️ Future Prospects
- Due to previous technical failures (his second radio transceiver and main linear amplifier are currently stuck at the repair shop because the technician’s wife is unfortunately dealing with health issues), Sylvester had to operate with reduced equipment.
- Nevertheless, the operator plans to return to the Trzebnica Hills area in the coming weeks with an upgraded setup as soon as the main equipment returns from the lab.
Warm greetings to all hunters and see you at the next activation! 73 & 51!

🌲 Natural & Historical Context: The Magic of “KOTLINOWE WZGÓRZA”
The Trzebnickie Hills (commonly known in Poland as Wzgórza Trzebnickie or Kocia Góra) form a picturesque glacial rampart rising above the Silesian Lowlands:
- Natural Beauty & Ecology: Designated as a Protected Landscape Area, this undulating terrain features steep moraine ridge lines, deep loess ravines, protected beech forests, and ancient oak groves. It serves as a vital ecological corridor and a sanctuary for diverse wildlife and rare bird species.
- Historical Legacy: Beyond its ecological significance, the region boasts thousands of years of human settlement. Nearby slopes hold archaeological sites dating back to prehistoric times, while the hills served as natural observation points during historical trade routes and military maneuvers in Silesia.
With an elevated position and a 3-element Skypper directional beam deployed right in the heart of nature, expect outstanding RF propagation across Europe and beyond!
