Greetings to Alex and all radio amateurs and hunters! The activation on September 13, 2026, at Fort Piechoty nr 4 – Lisia Góra (WBA reference 161DA/TFD05) turned out to be particularly challenging due to a series of unexpected obstacles, both logistical and propagation-related.

🏰 Logistical Inconvenients & Site Access

Although I had pre-arranged the necessary permissions to access the inside of the site, the president of the foundation managing the fort notified me at the last minute that the gates could not be opened due to a lack of staff on-site. Consequently, the entire operation had to take place outside the perimeter. The logistics were further complicated by the fort’s location, surrounded by private family allotment gardens: in the afternoon, there was a heavy influx of people tending to their plots, preventing me from parking close to the structure as I had done in the morning. I had to operate from a parking lot located a bit further away, though still within the permitted distance limits for the activation.

📻 Propagation Conditions & Results

I divided the day into two listening and transmitting sessions:

• First session: A good start with over 20 QSOs logged.
• Second session: A sharp drop, with only a few useful contacts.

Due to these factors, we failed to reach the minimum number of QSOs required to officially validate the activation. Propagation mirrored typical and difficult autumn characteristics, with very short, weak, and completely unstable openings.

🎯 Next Steps: Appointment for Part Two!

The activation remained “incomplete,” but we certainly aren’t giving up! To make up for it and bring home the final result, we have set the official completion date:

• 📅 Part 2 Date: Thursday, September 17, 2026
• ⏰ Time: From 14:00 UTC onwards
• 🎯 Goal: Surpass 30 QSOs and officially validate the WBA reference 161DA/TFD05!

🏰 Historical & Natural Context: Where Military Heritage Meets Nature

Fort Piechoty nr 4 (originally Infanteriewerk 4 / Fuchsberg) is one of the most intriguing remnants of the former Festung Breslau defense ring in Wrocław:

• Military Heritage: Erected between 1890 and 1891 as an infantry shelter (Schron Piechoty), the fortification underwent major expansion in 1910, receiving a thick reinforced concrete shield, guardhouses, and machine-gun trench positions. Positioned near the historical fortress weir on the Widawa River, it formed a key northern defense outpost during both World Wars.
• Natural Beauty: Today, the fort is tucked away in the serene greenery of Lisia Góra (“Fox Hill”) within the Sołtysowicki Forest (Las Sołtysowicki). Over decades, nature has embraced the red-brick casemates and moss-covered concrete structures, creating a stunning visual contrast between 19th-century military engineering and lush woodland foliage.

With a 3-element Skypper antenna beaming out signals from this elevated forest site, expect excellent RF propagation!
