Summary: The 34DA/S015 activation, dedicated entirely to the wild and majestic El Hierro Island (IOTA AF-004), concluded with an outstanding success, logging 227 QSOs from the operating site in Los Llanillos (La Frontera). Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Juan Carlos faced yet another hurdle: the power supply cable was left behind in Tenerife! Undeterred, he switched to battery power, efficiently managing his energy to ensure the mission’s success. The location provided exceptional operating conditions, with near-zero QRM—a rare treat that made signals crystal clear. While mountain formations behind the station blocked paths to the Americas, the sheer volume of contacts and the quality of the signals made this a landmark operation for the WBA, paying a fitting tribute to the unique charm of El Hierro.

We are thrilled to announce an upcoming IOTA activation from the wild and mesmerizing El Hierro Island (IOTA AF-004), the smallest and most westerly of the Canary Islands! 🌋

From August 13th to 15th, 2026, team 34DA183 (Juan Carlos) will be operating in “Holiday Style” from this volcanic sanctuary. El Hierro is not just a destination; it is a piece of history. For over two centuries, this island—specifically the area surrounding the iconic Faro de Orchilla—was considered the “Edge of the Known World,” marking the historic Prime Meridian (Ferro Meridian). ⚓️

Surrounded by dramatic volcanic cliffs, primary laurel forests, and some of the clearest night skies on the planet, we will be transmitting from the proximity of this legendary lighthouse, where the ancient world met the vast Atlantic. 🌌
