📝 Activity & Site Summary

Sylvester carried out an activation from Karskiburs on Wolin Island, a very scenic location featuring local and historical points of interest.

• The U-boat Base Obstacle: Sylvester originally planned to set up right at the local U-boat base. However, upon arrival, he found the area heavily restricted: The U-boat base is closed due to its poor technical condition. Sylvester noted that you can record video of the undergrowth, the concrete structures, and the approach to the bridge, but police presence and a local fishery inspection/water patrol forced him to relocate.
• Relocation: Expecting the main base area to be blocked, Sylvester moved about 100 to 150 meters further away onto a private plot belonging to the local naval office in Świnoujście. Thankfully, the local people there were very welcoming and friendly, granting him full permission to set up his station on their grounds.

📻 Technical and Operational Notes

• Rig & Power: Due to a failure with his amplifier, Sylvester had to drop down and work solely with radio power—running 80W on an Icom IC-7000 transceiver paired with a Skyper antenna raised 6.5 meters above the ground, along with an Icom SM-20 desk microphone. ⚡📻
• Propagation & Challenges: Propagation brought a few pleasant surprises, including strong signals from permanent European dwellers and an unexpected out-of-Europe contact with Renato (3AT303), which stood out as the sole non-European catch.
• Operator Discipline Issues: Sylvester reported facing severe hurdles due to heavy operator discipline issues, massive egos, and high power from callers who wouldn’t listen. This resulted in significant lost time, with stations calling blindly in the dark and forcing repeat calls, causing him to lose several QSOs. Despite the turbulence and having to shift his operating plans from morning to afternoon, Sylvester managed to log 60 QSOs.

🌟 Closing Remarks

Despite the logistical hurdles, police presence, and unruly pile-ups, the activation at Karskiburs wrapped up successfully. Sylvester concluded his Polish activations for this leg and is preparing for upcoming family travels toward Denmark, with future island and lighthouse operations on the horizon.
