Activation Summary
The activation of reference 34DA/L006 turned into a truly epic “Holiday Style” adventure. Despite a last-minute change of plans that delayed the start of transmissions, the radio activity was described by the team as “intense and highly satisfying.”
The station was set up near the Orchilla pier, a choice dictated by high temperatures that made visiting the nearby volcanic tube unfeasible. The location proved to be spectacular: far from light pollution, the night sky offered a breathtaking view of the Milky Way, making the ham radio experience even more atmospheric.
There was no shortage of expedition-style unexpected events: between one QSO and another, the team had to step in to rescue a hiker who had wandered off the proper path, while the youngest member of the team was put in charge of holding up the Delta Loop antenna. To top it all off, the team took advantage of the stunning location to capture some photos of the eclipse.

Perched on the rugged, volcanic southwestern tip of El Hierro—the westernmost and smallest of Spain’s Canary Islands—stands the iconic Faro de Orchilla. Built in 1930 from striking red volcanic stone, this lighthouse marks a place where raw, untamed nature meets deep historical significance.
For centuries, long before Greenwich claimed the title, the meridian passing through Orchilla was recognized as the Prime Meridian (Meridiano 0) of the ancient world. Ancient cartographers and astronomers, from Ptolemy to Louis XIII’s scientific commissions, viewed this remote cliffside as the literal edge of the Earth where the known world ended and the vast Atlantic Ocean began.
Today, this breathtaking location is a sanctuary of stark volcanic landscapes, dramatic black-lava cliffs plunging into deep blue waters, and some of the clearest, darkest night skies in the world. On August 12, 2026, amidst a rare celestial event, this historic crossroads will become a global radio hotspot!
