📝 Activity Summary

The activation day started earlier than usual. Thanks to a smooth morning schedule, Sylvester managed to enjoy a quick coffee and hit the road by 06:30 local time heading toward the island. ☕🚗

Upon arrival, Sylvester met with the local manager/administrator of the islands. Interestingly, both Jom Island (Z055) and Z091 are privately leased islands utilized for business operations. After a friendly chat, an agreement was reached allowing Sylvester to set up his station and park on-site, keeping clear of the children’s summer camp areas and the restaurant parking zones reserved strictly for staff and visitors. 🤝🏕️

📻 Technical and Operational Notes

• Rig & Power: Sylvester deployed his trusty Skyper antenna along with an IC-7000 transceiver powered by a Zetag B300P amplifier, running at around 100–120W (reaching up to 150W). ⚡📻
• Propagation Challenges: Propagation didn’t cooperate at the very beginning; the first hour was virtually a complete silence with very few contacts made. Things picked up initially with strong signals from Sardinia and a handful of European stations. Outside of Europe, conditions were virtually closed toward North and South America due to the early morning hour. 📶📉
• Final Log Count: Despite the slow start and challenging propagation, Sylvester successfully logged 82 QSOs, a result that exceeded expectations given the gloomy propagation outlook at departure. 🎯

The activation of Jom Island (161DA/Z005) turned out to be a rewarding and satisfying experience. The island itself—famous for its historical ties to Vikings and Slavs—offers wonderful cultural and craft initiatives, making it a fantastic and welcoming location despite the heavy background noise and early-morning band conditions. 🏰✨
