Activity Summary
Despite a tight schedule and the unpredictable weather typical of a family vacation, Sylvester 161DA135 successfully completed the activation of the picturesque river island of Wolińska Kępa.
The operation was conducted using an agile “field portable” setup, chosen to optimize time and adapt to the environment. The rig included an Icom 7000 transceiver with a Zetagi B300P amplifier (running approx. 200W), utilizing a Sirio 5000 mobile antenna—a strategic choice that allowed Sylvester to operate efficiently despite the challenging weather conditions. ⚡
Technical and Operational Notes
- Weather Conditions: The session was hampered by intermittent rain and unfavorable wind, which prevented the deployment of larger directional antennas (such as the Skyper). ️️
- Challenges: During the session, Sylvester encountered a technical issue with one of his microphones. He quickly bypassed the problem by switching to a backup headset, ensuring the operation continued. ️
- Propagation: Propagation was erratic, yet the session yielded 37 quality contacts. A notable mention goes to Lars 153DA102, who supported the operation in less-than-ideal conditions.
- Operations: Sylvester noted a lack of discipline within the pile-ups, which unfortunately consumed valuable time that could have been used for logging more contacts.
Closing Remarks
Despite the technical hurdles and the capricious weather, the activation of Wolińska Kępa once again demonstrated Sylvester’s passion for the World Beauties Award program. Operating from such a site—deeply rooted in Viking history, amidst open-air medieval reconstructions and pristine nature—adds an invaluable dimension to every QSO.
A big thank you to all the DX hunters who supported the activation and helped manage the pile-ups in difficult conditions. Sylvester’s journey continues: stay tuned for his next radio adventures! ✨

A Historic Gem Amidst Rivers and Nature
Wolińska Kępa (historically known as Plage Wiese or associated with Ostrów) is a small yet remarkably rich river island situated right along the Dziwna strait near the town of Wolin. Though compact in size, it holds a monumental place in local heritage: it is home to the famous Center of Slavs and Vikings (Centrum Słowian i Wikingów), a magnificent open-air museum that brings the medieval trading emporium and Viking legacy back to life.
Geographically and environmentally, its southern territory forms part of vital protected wetlands under the Natura 2000 network, offering a pristine backdrop of lush greenery, tranquil waters, and rich birdlife. Operating from this site means transmitting right from the heart of ancient legends!
