The Island that didn’t exist (on IOTA maps), but that we conquered on foot!

The epic and lighthearted micro-DXpedition by the Delta Alfa RC Team featuring tactical wades, juniper trees, and zero-impact radio!

1. Forget the Dusty Rules: Make Way for the True Radio Spirit!

Let’s be completely honest with a big smile: if we submitted the paperwork for this micro-islet to the official IOTA (Islands On The Air) committee, they would probably laugh us off, rejecting it for “lack of square kilometers” or overly rigid parameters.

But the World Beauties Award (WBA) and the Delta Alfa RC team are built differently.

For us, amateur radio isn’t just about massive ships, grand lighthouses, or multi-thousand-dollar expeditions. The true essence of radio lies in adventure, exploring the territory, protecting the environment, and, above all, having fun together as a community with a healthy dose of good humor!

It is in this cheerful, carefree spirit that we present the official birth of a brand-new, unpublished, and spectacular reference: WBA Island (Ref. 165DA/WI)!

2. The Sa Punta de S’Aliga Project: Where We Left Off

Our love story with this extraordinary corner of Sulcis, in the municipality of Portoscuso, runs deep. Back on December 30, 2024, our team set up their stations in this area to activate the SAC (Special Area of Conservation) zone of Sa Punta de S’Aliga, giving hunters worldwide the reference WWFF 165DA/IFF1305.

When we returned to the site to plan a new island expedition, nature surprised us: the sandbanks of the main beach of Sa Punta de S’Aliga, shaped by wave action and coastal dynamics, had temporarily reconnected to the mainland.

Give up? Not a chance! During our tactical exploration of the coast, the team’s eyes caught a small adjacent islet: a true emerging gem, completely surrounded by 360 degrees of sea, untouched and never before activated by an amateur radio station.

Since it was an uncharted piece of land without an official name on commercial maps, we claimed it exclusively for our award, officially naming it WBA Island!

3. Operation “Tactical Wade”: 165DA101 Alex & Giacomino to the Rescue!

The undisputed stars of this mission will be 165DA101 Alex and his trusty friend Giacomino!

Forget comfortable ferry rides or motorboat landings. The approach to WBA Island will happen in true “carefree commando” style:

Crossing on Foot: Alex and Giacomino will cross the stretch of sea separating the coast from the islet by doing an actual tactical wade on foot, waist-deep in water!
Dry Gear: Transceivers, antennas, cables, poles, and autonomous batteries will be packed inside waterproof dry bags and carried overhead to ensure everything arrives dry and ready to operate.
Planted Flag: Once stepping onto the islet, our two heroes will plant the Delta Alfa RC flag on the highest point of WBA Island for the very first time, officially kicking off the pile-up!

4. Untouched Nature & Zero Impact: The Realm of the Junipers

Don’t let its compact size fool you: WBA Island is a small haven of biodiversity. Protected by its sea isolation, it hosts lush Mediterranean scrub and guards extraordinary ancient juniper trees, shaped over time by the force of the Mistral wind.

In full alignment with the values of the WBA and Delta Alfa RC, the activation will be carried out with the utmost ecological care:

Leave No Trace: No stakes or structures will harm the roots or vegetation of the island.
Eco-friendly Operation: The radio stations will operate in complete harmony with the local flora and fauna, leaving the islet exactly as pristine as it was found.
