📖 Historical Context & Significance: This series honors Saint Bernard of Alzira and his sisters, Saint Mary and Saint Grace (originally Ahmed, Zaida, and Zoraida). After Bernard embraced Christianity at the Poblet Monastery, he converted his sisters. On July 23, 1180, all three suffered martyrdom for their faith near Alzira. Today, Alzira commemorates their memory with a unique blend of solemn devotion and vibrant Valencian traditions, most notably the thunderous mascletàs (rhythmic firecracker displays) and spectacular nighttime pyrotechnic shows that illuminate the entire city.
