📈 306 QSOs LOGGED: A DAY IN THE HEART OF THE MINES

We have reached the sixth chapter of this unique adventure that is taking me, step by step, to discover the 30 most beautiful and strategic viewpoints along the entire route of the Santa Barbara Mining Trail (CMSB). 🎒 This time, my inseparable penguin mascot Giacomino and I chose a truly special observation point: an open area near the historic Posada di Pitzinurri, at approximately 360 meters above sea level, right at the beginning of the sixth stage. 🗺️✨

🚜 The Adventure with the “Panda Shack” and the “Quiet” Posada

To reach this panoramic position, my trusty white Fiat Panda 169 4×4 had to grind out the kilometers, tackling the terrain with its usual agility. Upon arriving at the Posada, I unfortunately found the structure closed, but this only added a touch of almost mystical solitude to the day.

I spent the entire activation in absolute solitude, surrounded only by the intermittent noise of the few vehicles passing on the nearby provincial road, which provided a background hum to the rustle of the ether. 🚗💨 The day turned out to be quite hot, and the sun did not spare its energy: to manage the station effectively and avoid heatstroke, I transformed the cabin of the Panda into my operational “shack,” sheltering myself from the glare and staying focused on the pile-up. ☀️🌡️

📡 Log Analysis and Propagation: Europe at the Center

The log of the day, analyzed in detail from the file CMSB6 165DA101 WBA LIVE 1.5 – LOG.csv, tells a story of radio success with 306 QSOs logged. 📝

• Propagation: Conditions on the ether were truly superlative regarding the European short-skip, benefiting from a simultaneous summer and winter opening that made signals extremely clear and consistent. 🇪🇺📡
• Continental Distribution: As shown by the data analysis, the vast majority of contacts (303 out of 306) came from the European continent, confirming the solidity of our continental coverage. We also logged 1 contact from Africa and 1 from Asia. 🌍
• The Big Absentees: As you correctly anticipated, the long-skip that usually allows us to hook stations in North America and Oceania was missing; today’s conditions were focused, generously rewarding local and intra-European traffic. 📉

🏁 CONCLUSION AND GREETINGS

Despite the heat and the solitude of the Posada di Pitzinurri, the 306 QSOs brought home represent an excellent result that strengthens the WBA score for all the friends who answered my call. It was a day of pure “field radio,” where the strategy of positioning in an open area proved to be a winner for keeping the reception rate high.

As always, I thank my travel companion Giacomino for overseeing the log, and I send a greeting to all the Hunters who, again today, allowed 165DA101/P to resonate among the peaks of the Arburese region. 📍 THE CONTEXT: From Pitzinurri to Montevecchio, the Path of the Miners

Stage 06 (Alternative Route “Bis”) of the trail represents a true deep-dive into Sardinia’s industrial past. The route kicks off from the picturesque hamlet of Pitzinurri (Ingurtosu) and winds along old mining footpaths and historic narrow-gauge railways once used to transport heavy ore.

Cutting through dense holm-oak and cork forests that are slowly reclaiming the ancient industrial ruins, the path leads straight to the monumental mining village of Montevecchio—one of Europe’s most significant and imposing symbols of industrial archaeology. A route where the historic grit of the ancient miners blends with the pristine silence of nature.

🎙️ THE LOCATION: Radio Signals from the Pitzinurri Posada! 🏰⛰️

For this sixth field day, Alex and Giacomino will set up their portable station at an exceptional panoramic viewpoint, located right at the starting line of the stage near the historic Posada of Pitzinurri, at the exact coordinates: 39.51523, 8.51515.
