📻 WBA Expedition Report: Castello de Vilella (30DA/CT007) – Mission Accomplished! 🏰
The 30DA Team has successfully completed the activation of Castello de Vilella, marking a historic milestone for the World Beauties Award (WBA) program. With a total of 173 QSOs, this result represents another excellent achievement for the month of June, realized through the dedication and perseverance of the team, who managed to overcome some quite temperamental propagation. 📡✨

“Today was not an easy day. It began with some minor GPS issues, which caused a few delays—though we didn’t lose much time, about 30 minutes. We met at 8:30 AM local time at ‘Forn de Jacob’ in Llutxent for a quick coffee before starting the trek toward our destination (Castell de Vilella). It is a remote area, rarely traveled, and given the season, there is a high risk of forest fires. The Almiserà City Council and local Forestry services were notified electronically of our presence, and we had the ‘green light’ from all authorities, so there were no issues.
Upon arrival, we looked for a safe spot for the antenna that was also within the correct target range of the Castello de Vilella. We secured the antenna to a wooden pole and added guy wires for safety. The wind was not strong today; it was just a light, very pleasant, and welcome breeze. The best part of the day was the total absence of QRM—a real luxury for radio operations. 💎
The first contact arrived at 08:27 UTC. Our colleague Lars 153DA102 made the first call, which surprised us since conditions were not optimal. We encountered several unexpected contacts, including 49RC106 Jose Manuel, 106SD101 Santi (who was difficult to work), and 138HV2 Eduardo. Propagation dropped drastically around 11:30 UTC, leaving us with moments of complete silence, which we used to take a break and eat. The afternoon continued very slowly with little activity, low propagation, and intense heat. The log rate slowed down significantly, so we decided to go QRT around 18:40 UTC. We were exhausted but satisfied with the results: 173 QSOs, 30 countries, and 6 continents. Not bad at all considering today’s conditions! The drive back was very enjoyable, as all three of us had mobile equipment on; we heard each other clearly on the road. Until the next activity, 73s!” 🌍📻

The Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA) is thrilled to announce a historic radio expedition for the World Beauties Award (WBA). On June 27, 2026, starting at 09:00 UTC, our Spanish team—comprising Sergio (30DA010), Javi (30DA202), and Pepe (30DA201)—will embark on a journey back in time to activate the legendary Castello de Vilella (Reference: 30DA/CT007).
🛡️ A Journey Through History
Located in the heart of Valencia, the Castello de Vilella is an ancient Andalusian fortification dating back to the late 12th or early 13th century. Once a vital military stronghold overlooking the “Coll de Llautó” pass, it served as a crucial gate between the Vall d’Albaida and the Safor region. Today, this site stands as a silent sentinel, with its ancient tapial (rammed earth) walls and remnants of its majestic past, whispering tales of the Reconquista and the legacy of King James I of Aragon.
📡 The First-Ever HF & 11m Activation
This is a monumental milestone: it is the absolute first time this historic site will be activated on HF frequencies and specifically on the 11-meter band. By setting up our field station in the immediate vicinity of these ruins, we are not just operating a radio; we are bridging the gap between centuries of history and the modern spirit of international radio communication.
🛠️ Technical Setup
Our team will deploy a robust field station designed to capture the essence of the site. The setup will feature a mono-element Delta Loop antenna, ensuring maximum efficiency to reach hunters across the globe. We aim to honor the site’s historical significance through the clarity and reach of our signals.
