I have truly thrown myself into this exciting and brand-new adventure of bringing you portable field activations, carefully selecting the most strategic, remote, and scenic spots along the 30 stages of the Santa Barbara Mining Trail (CMSB). 🎒 We have now reached the fifth chapter of this incredible challenge, and my inseparable plush penguin mascot Giacomino and I wanted to do things in a big way—delivering a radio day that will be etched into the history of the World Beauties Award (WBA)! 🗺️✨
🧗 The Climb to Punta su Nuraxi: The Panda 4×4 Knows No Rivals! 🚜💨
For this fifth stage, we selected one of the most rugged and panoramic points of the entire trail, climbing up to a staggering 435 meters above sea level at the summit of Punta su Nuraxi.
The road to get there proved to be extremely difficult and wild from the very start. The final stretch, in particular, was incredibly steep, featuring a surface completely covered in raw bedrock and highly slippery loose stones. But for our trusty white Fiat Panda 169 4×4, obstacles simply do not exist: it climbed up like a true mountain “tractor,” tackling the steep inclines without a single issue and placing us exactly at the highest, most strategic point of the plateau! 🏔️ True 4×4 power!
Up here, I spent over eight hours in absolute and beautiful solitude, surrounded and accompanied solely by the rustle of the wind and majestic Sardinian nature, in a wide-open area offering a jaw-dropping 360-degree view plunging down toward the sea and the dunes. Since the day was quite hot and the sun was beating down hard, I preferred to set up the station and operate directly from inside the cabin of the Panda, transformed for the occasion into a fantastic mobile radio shack! 🚗📻
🚀 Marathon Chronicles and Pile-up Analysis 🏃♂️💨
What an incredible result! I have just wrapped up the 165DA/CMSB05 activation today, and I am still buzzing: reaching 434 QSOs in just a few hours is a milestone that makes every bit of effort worthwhile! 🎙️⚡
Here is a look at this intense and extraordinary performance:
- The Pace of the Activation ⏱️ I turned on the radio and started calling at 09:18 UTC, logging the very last contact at 16:12 UTC. I stayed glued to the microphone for 6 hours and 54 minutes non-stop, without a single moment of respite!
- Speed and Efficiency at the Mic 🚀 I maintained a crazy average of about 63 QSOs per hour, which means completing and logging a valid contact every 57 seconds! The initial impact was literally devastating: the pile-up exploded immediately, and in the first 18 minutes (from 09:18 to 09:36) I had already accumulated a whopping 50 contacts, hitting a rate of almost 3 QSOs per minute! Managing this human wall was an immense satisfaction; I managed to keep my concentration razor-sharp and my rhythm steady throughout the entire marathon, handling the traffic in a smooth, clean, and super-organized manner. 🎧✅
🌍 Superb Propagation: The Ether is On Fire! 📡⚡
Propagation was the absolute star of the day—I would define the conditions as truly superlative! We witnessed a simultaneous summer and winter short-skip opening over Europe, a fantastic phenomenon that yielded extraordinary antenna signals.
- Heart in Europe, Eyes on the World 🇪🇺✈️🌎 The vast majority of hunters came through with powerful signals from Europe, confirming that our natural “balcony” was perfectly suited for the continent. But the most exciting part was the global reach: beyond the rock-solid European base, I had the immense joy of launching the Skypper’s signal way past continental borders, bringing Stage 5 of the CMSB into South America, Asia, Africa, and even Oceania! Hearing those distant voices emerge from the wind static of Punta su Nuraxi gave me absolute goosebumps. 🌊🗺️
- Constant 5/9 Reports 📶✨ Receiving almost constant 5/9 signal reports from every corner of the globe was the greatest gratification. It confirmed that the portable station and the antenna were tuned down to the millimeter, fully ready to endure such a radio marathon.
- Extraordinary Participation 🏢💼 Considering it was Monday (a regular working day), many Hunters were busy with their daily jobs. Despite this, the turnout was impressive: so many enthusiasts went completely out of their way not to miss the reference, even calling me on the sly or during short breaks directly from their workplaces! You guys are amazing! 🤝
💭 Reflections from the Front & Small “Incidents” from the Field 🍎💧⛱️
This activation represented a significant physical and mental test. To avoid losing the momentum of the pile-up and to keep my energy levels peaked, I skipped a proper lunch altogether, surviving solely on some fresh fruit and a few sips of water between calls.
And there was no shortage of action! At one point, I had to literally drop the microphone on the fly, scramble out of the Panda, and chase down my sunshade umbrella, which was about to be completely swept away by a violent gust of wind! A true adventure within the adventure, right in the thick of the heaviest radio traffic! 💨⛱️ But that is exactly what makes portable activations so electrifying, alive, and unique.

434 QSOs officially mark a brand-new ABSOLUTE RECORD for the month of June! 🥇 Trackers and hunters, we have written an unforgettable page of the WBA! I am proud of how we handled the pile-up together and to have shared this historic milestone with all the radio enthusiasts who answered the call of 165DA101/P. It was a memorable day spent among cables, radio waves, and pure, raw passion for outdoor radio!

Stage 05 of the trail is one of the longest, most demanding, and mesmerizing segments of the entire journey. The path winds between the mouth of the Rio Mannu in Portixeddu and the legendary golden desert of Piscinas, crossing an immense sand dune system that ranks among the highest in Europe.
The trail cuts through dense Mediterranean scrub, overlooks the spectacular and solitary beach of Scivu, and follows old mining tracks and abandoned railways once used to transport ore down to the sea. A pristine, primordial landscape where nature rules supreme.
