These log numbers take on an entirely different meaning when read through the audio report sent by Sylvester directly from the field:

“Today was a total Armageddon. Terrible weather with a continuous, sudden shift between scorching sun, sudden storms, and very strong gusts of wind. Despite a 30-minute delay due to logistical unexpected events on-site, the most fundamental thing was managing to be present in the ether.”

Operating in /M right next to the historic earthen ramparts of the fort amplified the operational difficulties:

• Deep QSB Conditions: Signals shifted within seconds from total silence to massive peaks of intensity. Pulling callsigns out of the noise floor required an exceptional ear.
• Intentional QRM (The frequency “troublemakers”): As if the weather wasn’t enough, some poorly behaved operators attempted to disrupt the pile-up by constantly tuning antennas and generating strange noises on nearby frequencies (.410 and .415). Sylvester, acting as a true veteran, completely ignored them until they grew bored and left the frequency clear. 🤐🤫
• Extreme Pack-up Under a Downpour: Sylvester set up and dismantled his stations under a brutal convective torrential downpour. “I got atrociously wet; I don’t have a single dry thread on me!”, he shared at the end of the activation, while tearing down the gear to return to his regular work shift.

🎖️ The True WBA Spirit: The Value of Dedication

On a sunny day with wide-open propagation, making 200 or 300 QSOs is within anyone’s reach. But making 41 QSOs in the middle of a storm, with antennas whipping in the wind, water leaking into the vehicle, and thunder rolling in the background, is the ultimate proof of what true adventure ham radio is all about.

Sylvester gave the World Beauties Award hunters an old-school challenge. Connecting with station 161DA/TFD07 under those conditions meant that chasers had to test their own antennas, their patience, and their skill in adjusting the RF gain to extract Sylvester’s voice from the mud of QRM and QSB.

Huge kudos go to Sylvester for holding his ground, for locking in two outstanding DX contacts with Brazil (Division 3), and for honoring the history of Fort Piechoty nr 6 by carrying it into the protected space of our radio waves.

🏰 The Venue: Operating from the Shadows of Infanterie Werk 6

Sylvester will be setting up a portable/mobile station (/M) directly adjacent to the historic Fort Piechoty nr 6 in Wrocław. Operating right next to these massive concrete and brick structures creates a profound connection between the history of telecommunications and modern radio amateur spirit.

Built between 1890 and 1891, this fortress was designed to shield 250 infantrymen beneath meters of brick, concrete, and earth. Walking through this site is like stepping into a time capsule of European history:

• From Echoes to Airwaves: In 1910, the fort was modernized with cutting-edge tech of the era, including internal acoustic speaking tubes (telegrafo acustico) used by spotters in the “snail-shaped” concrete observation posts to relay coordinates. On June 14th, those acoustic whispers of the past will transform into high-frequency RF signals bouncing off the ionosphere! 🌊
• The Ultimate Survivalist Site: This fort survived the fierce 1945 siege of Festung Breslau, remaining undefeated until the general capitulation. Later, during the tense years of the Cold War, it served as the high-tech Air Defense Command Post for the 98th Artillery Regiment.
