π OFFICIAL PORTABLE ACTIVATION REPORT: 165DA/CMSB02 ππ
Chapter two is in the books! π¬ The exciting and brand-new radio-trekking adventure continues, dedicated to bringing you portable field activations from the most strategic points along the 30 stages of the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara. On Sunday, May 31, 2026, the airwaves shook once again under the weight of a heavy pile-up for official reference 165DA/CMSB02! π‘π
π§ Field Chronicles: Hairpin Turns, the “White Giant,” and the Warmth of the Panda πβοΈ
For this second stage, I selected one of the most spectacular and panoramic spots of the entire trail, setting up at an elevation of 126 meters above sea level. The station was deployed on a sharp hairpin curve along the path, offering a jaw-dropping view directly overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the majestic Pan di Zucchero (Sugar Loaf) limestone sea stack, right next to a characteristic wooden lectern signpost.
To ensure safety and keep the path clear for any incoming traffic or hikers, I carefully positioned the trusty Panda 4×4 so it wouldn’t obstruct the way. Throughout the day, the serene isolation was briefly interrupted by only a few passing pilgrims and 3 camper vans; for the rest of the time, I enjoyed hours of absolute, refreshing solitude, surrounded only by the rustle of the wind through the trees and the magical static hiss of the 11-meter band.
The day turned out to be quite hot, and with zero natural shade on the open clearing, I had to retreat inside the cabin of the Panda to escape the beating sun and operate in comfort. From inside the rig, with the Skypper aimed at the horizon, the show began.
π Log Analysis: The DX Breakdown ππ
A detailed analysis of the attached log file CMSB2 165DA101 LIVE 1.5 - LOG.csv highlights the excellent performance of the activation and the unique ionospheric propagation paths that shaped the session:
- Total Contacts Logged: 123 valid QSOs successfully completed! π
- European Short-Skip: Absolutely phenomenal and hard-hitting. Signals from the old continent arrived like freight trains, dominated by a massive presence of hunter stations from France (14 Division) and Germany (13 Division) filling up the logbooks, followed by great exchanges with hunters from Belgium (16 Division) and Italy (1 Division). πͺπΊ
- South American Front: Exceptionally strong! The path towards the South Atlantic provided moments of pure adrenaline, yielding rock-solid signals and incredible peaks, especially from Brazil (3 Division). π§π·
- The Surprise QSO: The most unexpected and astonishing moment of the day was an incredible long-distance contact with the state of Maine (United States, 2 Division), which managed to pierce through the heavy pile-up with a fantastic signal! πΊπΈ
- The Big Absentees: True to the unpredictable nature of the ionosphere, the day brought total radio silence from Oceania and, surprisingly, from the nearby Canary Islands (34 Division), which remained completely deaf for the entire duration of the activation. π
π Conclusion & Acknowledgments ππ€
This second chapter of our trail challenge has proven once again how magical and unpredictable 11-meter portable operations can be. Broadcasting right in front of the massive colossus of Pan di Zucchero, backed by the tactical mobile support of the trusty Panda 4×4, made this an unforgettable activation. A massive thank you goes out to all the stations who took part, handled the pile-up with great radio discipline, and tracked our progress via the Live Log!
The radio batteries and the 4×4 gears are now resting up. Giacomino the penguin and I are already studying the topographic maps for the next unmissable stage along the mining trail ππ§.
Catch you all very soon “on the air” for Stage 03! ποΈβ¨

π₯Ύ 165DA/CMSB02: Vertical Horizons! 11 Meters in 4×4 Facing the White Giant of Pan di Zucchero ππ‘
The grand radio-trekking journey along the ancient mining paths continues! After a massive and successful debut, the CMSB 11m On The Trail Challenge moves to the western coast of Sardinia for one of the most breathtaking and scenic stages of the entire trail: official reference 165DA/CMSB02! π
Operator 165DA101 Alex and his faithful penguin mascot Giacomino are ready to deploy their portable station on a natural balcony suspended between the sky and the Mediterranean Sea, this time with a special off-road twist: the indispensable support of their trusty Panda 169 4×4 climb-machine! ππ¨
π ACTIVATION DETAILS
- Official Reference: 165DA/CMSB02
- Date: Sunday, May 31, 2026
- Start Time: 13:00 UTC (15:00 CEST local time)
- Band: 11 Meters (SSB)
- Setup: Portable Activation with Panda 169 4×4 support (Battery power & Skypper Antenna) π
π THE CONTEXT: From Nebida to Masua
Stage 02 of the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara is a short but incredibly intense 9.3 km route. It is a section where the unique geology of Sardiniaβone of the oldest lands in Europeβexplodes with color. The path winds through purple puddingstone rocks and the pure white limestone of the cliffs.
This trail perfectly blends human sacrifice with natural majesty, passing right by extraordinary cliffside industrial archaeology monuments, such as the Lamarmora Chemical Laveria in Nebida and the world-famous engineering masterpiece of Porto Flavia in Masua.
ποΈ THE PORTABLE DEPLOYMENT: Overlooking “Pan di Zucchero”
For this second activation, Alex and Giacomino will set up their station just a short distance from the beginning of the stage, choosing a highly strategic and panoramic spot easily accessible by their 4×4.
- The Location: A breathtaking natural viewpoint facing the majestic limestone sea stack of Pan di Zucchero (Sugar Loaf), the highest faraglione in the Mediterranean!
- Radio & Logistics: No heavy backpacking this time! The Panda 169 4×4 serves as the perfect tactical field base, carrying heavy batteries and the portable gear with ease. Operating right over the sea cliff will provide the Skypper Antenna with an outstanding take-off angle and an ideal saltwater ground plane to maximize short-skip and long-path DX signals. Giacomino will be right there, monitoring the S-meter and giving moral support! π¦πΉπ§
π WBA HUNTERS: Keep the Streak Alive!
Every single stage logged is a crucial step toward completing the circuit and climbing the ranks of the World Beauties Award (WBA). Securing your contact early in the challenge ensures your path toward the premium progressive multiplier bonuses at the end of the 30-stage journey!
