📝 THE LOGBOOK: THE LIVE CHRONICLE BY THE TEAM

Adapted from the audio report by Sergio (30DA010):

Our adventure began early yesterday morning—even earlier than usual due to the distance to the site. We all met up in Cheste to head out together towards Sot de Chera. This time, I brought along a PMR walkie-talkie for communication between the cars during the drive. It turned out to be an excellent choice, as we had previously lost track of each other during the Chativa activation without any way to communicate!

Following the advice we received to prepare for the total lack of cell coverage in that remote area, we pulled over about 5 to 10 kilometers before reaching the destination (at the last spot with signal) to set up the PC and switch the logging software into offline mode.

Once we arrived at the site, standing at 800 meters of altitude, we found the perfect scenario: absolutely no wind, completely clear skies in every direction, and beautiful sunshine framing the day.

We immediately split up the tasks to maximize our time:

  1. Sergio (30DA010) put up the antenna right away (our trusty single-element Delta Loop) and then focused on cabling and setting up the radio station.
  2. Pepe took charge of logistics… lighting the fire to prepare a fantastic field lunch featuring Torra (grilled meat and sausages, following local tradition!).
  3. Javi (30DA202) grabbed brushes and paint to spruce up and repaint the weathered rural structure of the forest cabin, leaving a tangible mark of our visit.

Right from the very first contacts, we knew propagation was exceptional. There was a constant, non-stop flow of signals (a true, continuous pile-up), without any of those typical dead hours where you go an hour without a single contact. The QSOs were rolling in one after another!

At one point during the day, we had a wonderful and emotional surprise. Amidst the heavy pile-up, I recognized a voice: it was Mario from Malta, a dear fellow ham who, back in the Sugar Delta days, had stayed at my house for 5 or 6 days along with two or three other club members (right where I have my base station and antenna farm). Hearing his voice on the radio after so many years, especially since he didn’t initially realize who I was under my current callsign, was an absolute joy!

By the time we sat down for lunch, we already had 100 QSOs in the log, and in a flash, we hit 200. We took a tiny 15-to-20-minute break to eat, and upon jumping back on the radio, we watched the counter fly past 300!

The sun was beginning to drop rapidly behind the mountains, and we risked having to tear down the station in pitch blackness (which is always dangerous out in the wild at 800 meters of altitude). We were sitting at 370 QSOs, and even though the propagation was still wide open—every time I went down to the .555 calling frequency and called QRZ, 5 or 6 stations would call back at the same time!—I had to ask the team: “What do we do? Do we stay?”. Javi and Pepe told me: “It’s your call, Sergio!”. In the end, for safety reasons, we had to make the tough call to close the station. We tore down the antenna just in time: as we loaded the last items into the car, night fell completely. The drive home was long and tiring (I didn’t get back until nearly 22:50), but the satisfaction is beyond words!

📊 DX LOG SCIENTIFIC ANALYSIS (30DA/P013)

Data extracted from the official Live Log on 30 SPAIN:

  • Total Contacts Made: 374 QSOs 📈
  • Countries Contacted: 34 Distinct DXCC Divisions 🌍
  • Continents Contacted: 6 Continents (WAC – Worked All Continents completed!) 🗺️
  • Average Hourly Rate: Around 65–70 contacts per hour—a blistering pace worthy of a major contest.

The log analysis confirms the incredible efficiency of the single-element Delta Loop erected in a field environment. Its very low angle of radiation allowed the signal to clear the mountain peaks of the Los Serranos comarca, simultaneously hitting short-range European stations while delivering outstanding intercontinental (DX) contacts across all 6 inhabited continents.

💬 THE EXPERT’S COMMENTARY: A RECORD-BREAKING FEAT!

This wasn’t just a routine activation; this was a historic milestone for the DX Adventure Radio Club! Racking up 374 QSOs during a single portable operation, from an isolated site completely devoid of amenities like the Caseta de la Perdiz, is a titanic achievement. It officially secures the ABSOLUTE RECORD for the month of May for the World Beauties Award! 🏆🔥

Multiple factors make this activation legendary:

  • True Field Day Adaptation: Operating on battery power, pre-configuring PCs offline, and managing an unrelenting pile-up requires steady nerves and top-tier technical competence.
  • Radio Utility & Environmental Respect: While the radio waves connected the world, Javi was repainting the degraded forest shelter and Pepe was running the camp base. This is the true spirit of amateur radio: leaving a site better than you found it.
  • The Magic of DX: The unexpected contact between Sergio and Mario from Malta embodies the very essence of ham radio: destroying distances and reuniting old friends over the airwaves after years of silence.

🏁 CONCLUSION

The 30DA team has proven that with dedication, teamwork, and the right gear (a special shout-out to the fantastic Delta Loop!), no mountain obstacle can stand in the way of radio passion. Reference 30DA/P013 has been soundly pulled out of the silence of Valencia’s wilderness and into the history books of the WBA.

A massive thank you to Sergio, Javi, and Pepe for upholding the club’s honor and giving hundreds of DX hunters an unforgettable contact!

👥 The Activation Team (The Operators)

Braving the mountain trails and setting up a true field day station, you will find our dedicated operators on the airwaves:

  • 🎙️ Sergio – 30DA010
  • 🎙️ Javi – 30DA202
  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 …and our great friend Pepe!

🏞️ The Site: History, Grit, and Context

The Refugio Caseta de la Perdiz is not your typical tourist spot—and that is exactly why this activation is so special. Nestled in the mountainous terrain of Sot de Chera, this site embodies the raw, untamed spirit of the Spanish wilderness.

Originally built as a humble forest refuge and an emergency shelter for hikers, this unmanaged “casita” has weathered the elements for decades. Today, it stands as a rustic, weathered relic of the past, showing the scars of time and abandonment. It is a symbol of survival and a stark reminder of the solitary life of the early foresters.

⚠️ The Field Day Challenge: Because the refuge itself is in a state of decay and offers no modern amenities, Sergio, Javi, and Pepe will be setting up a 100% campale (field) station in the immediate vicinity! Expect portable mast poles, battery power, and true radio-adventure grit. 🔋🌲

💎 The Importance of This Activation

Why activate 30DA/P013? The World Beauties Award (WBA) isn’t just about beautiful postcards; it is about celebrating the hidden, authentic, and sometimes forgotten corners of our planet.

By placing the Caseta de la Perdiz on the air, our team is bridging the gap between historical isolation and global communication. When you copy our signals, you aren’t just making a QSO—you are connecting with the silent history of these mountains, the geological wonders of the Chera-Sot de Chera Natural Park, and the rustic charm of a shelter that has protected weary travelers for generations.

📻 Operators Notes

  • We will be operating Portable (/P) using efficient wire antennas and field gear.
  • Please listen carefully for the operators’ instructions, keep the pile-up disciplined, and let’s make some noise on the bands! 🌊
  • Don’t forget to track our progress on the Live Log via 30 SPAIN.

Join us for this incredible radio journey! Let’s pull this reference out of the mountain silence and into the logbooks of the world! 🌍📡
