Because Limpias Island is a strictly protected natural reserve and an ecological sanctuary, access is heavily restricted. However, thanks to a special government authorization, Andoni and Maria have been granted one-of-a-kind permission to drive their mobile shack directly onto the island! 🎟️🚗 They will be setting up a rugged field station (stazione campale) in an optimal, environmentally respectful area to maximize their RF takeoff over the surrounding waters. 🎣⚡
🌊📜 Radio Waves Meet Living History
Operating from Limpias Island is not just about chasing a rare IWI reference; it is about connecting our radio waves with centuries of maritime history and industrial grit.
As Andoni and Maria transmit, they will be standing right beside the majestic ruins of the Molino de la Grazosa, a stunning 18th-century tidal mill. This stone fortress was engineered as an autonomous industrial platform, swallowed by the tides of the Asón River to power heavy millstones. Right next to it stands the iconic chimney of an old indigo (añil) factory—a silent witness to the golden era when the river port of Limpias was a bustling hub of international trade. 🏭🌾
Depending on the tide during the activation, the scenery will dramatically shift:
- 🌊 At High Tide: The station will be completely encircled by a deep, mirrors-like water surface, perfect for boosting our signal propagation!
- ⏳ At Low Tide: The muddy marshes of the Santoña, Victoria, and Joyel Marshes Natural Park will reveal themselves, showcasing the wild, untouched heart of Cantabria.
While hunting for grey herons or cormorants in the skies, our operators will also be surrounded by local folklore. Legend says a fierce dragon once terrorized these waters before being defeated by the local youth! 🐉⚔️
