🎙️ WBA ACTIVATION REPORT: BETWEEN HISTORY AND PROPAGATION 🐧🌍
Reference 165DA/P075 – Matzaccara Panoramic Viewpoint
Today, the call of my favorite local hills was irresistible. My inseparable companion Giacomino and I chose to activate the summit of Matzaccara, in the municipality of San Giovanni Suergiu (Cadastral Code G287). Despite the cloudy skies, our enthusiasm was sky-high!
Daily Analysis and Strategy 📻 We kicked off around 13:00 UTC, betting on the 11-meter band propagation which, lately, performs best from late afternoon into the evening. The start was indeed slow: the European backscatter to the southeast was weak, forcing me to work smartly to snatch the first interesting long-distance QSOs.
The Magic Turnaround and “Top” Contacts 💥 After 15:30 UTC, the situation literally exploded! A very strong short European propagation opened up, accompanied by incredible openings toward Central and South America. Our Skipper antenna did an outstanding job!
The most exciting moments were undoubtedly the transatlantic “strikes”:
- Division 195 (Grenada Islands): A fantastic signal coming straight from the Caribbean! 🇬🇩✨
- Division 123 (Bermuda Islands): A precious contact that added great prestige to this activation. 🇧🇲
Final numbers of our adventure:
- 174 total QSOs logged! 🏆
- Beautiful geographic variety: plenty of France (14), United Kingdom (26), Spain (30), and thrilling connections with the American continent.
Curiosities and Weather 🌩️🇫🇷 While the antennas were buzzing, we were visited by some tourists, including a French couple who were very curious about our portable station. It was a pleasure to tell them about the historical importance of this site while Giacomino kept an eye on the cables! Unfortunately, around 16:00 UTC, a thunderstorm approached dangerously, forcing us to stay alert for safety.
Conclusion 🌅 We close this activation with hearts full of satisfaction. Bringing the history of Matzaccara, its former WWF lookout, and its Roman and Nuragic secrets to the world through radio waves was a unique experience.

From the peak, the gaze sweeps 360 degrees over the Gulf of Palmas, the Sant’Antioco lagoon, and the distant silhouette of San Pietro Island.
Echoes of the Past 📻📜
Our antennas will rise beside the historic WWF Lookout, originally a World War II fortification built to guard the Mediterranean. As we transmit, we are surrounded by the whispers of history:
- Ancient Civilizations: The area is believed to host the remains of the Roman city Populum, with nearby thermal ruins and necropolises.
- Prehistoric Roots: The presence of Domus de Janas and Nuragic structures tells a story of human presence dating back thousands of years.
The Interaction 🤝⚡
This WBA activation celebrates the synergy between technology and heritage. By operating from this hilltop, we pay homage to the ancient watchers who stood here before us. Our radio waves will connect the historical depth of the Sulcis region with the global radio community.
