🏰 WBA 30DA/CT005 Activation Report – Corbera Castle

Operators: 30DA010 Sergio, 30DA202 Javi & Pepe

Location: Castillo de Corbera (Valencia, Spain)

Challenge: Extreme Hiking & Endurance Radio

🥾 The Ascent: Sweat and Determination

The day began calmly with a group breakfast at nine, but the real test of strength started immediately after. Although Corbera Castle stands only 100 meters above our base, the path to reach it is a winding 400-meter trail consisting of endless switchbacks and steep inclines.

We had to make two trips loaded with all the equipment. For me, being a bit out of shape, it was quite an ordeal; I reached the top literally drenched in sweat. Once there, we faced a small setback: the access gate to the tower was locked. We had intended to set up about 20 meters higher, but we had to settle for our current position.

🚁 Radio under “Escort” and WWFF Diplomacy

As soon as we started the radio activation, a drone (likely belonging to a curious neighbor) began hovering around us, filming us for almost the entire time—we were officially the stars of the fortress!

Throughout the eight hours on the summit, we drew the curiosity of many families and children out trekking. It was a point of pride to explain the WWFF (World Wide Flora and Fauna) project to them and share how, from that very spot, we were talking to Vietnam. The locals were thrilled by the idea that their town, Corbera, was becoming famous around the world thanks to our antennas.

📡 Log Analysis: An 8-Hour Marathon

The radio activity was a true test of patience. Contacts came in a “drip feed,” one by one, requiring significant physical and mental endurance.

  • Duration: From 09:16 UTC to 17:20 UTC (over 8 hours of continuous operation).
  • Extreme Weather: We went from the scorching midday sun, without a single tree for shelter, to a sudden, biting cold as soon as the sun dipped below the horizon.

📉 The Descent: The Final Obstacle

If the ascent was hard, the descent was perhaps even worse. The path is incredibly steep and covered in gravel and loose stones; we slipped several times. Fortunately, we reached the cars safe and sound, ready to unload everything and enjoy a well-deserved moment of rest.

🏁 Conclusion

To put it bluntly: this was probably the toughest challenge of my life as a radio amateur. Carrying the gear to the top of a castle, enduring eight hours between the heat and the cold, and managing every single QSO through that fatigue is the very essence of our passion. Corbera was “on air” today, and the satisfaction makes every drop of sweat worth it.

🏰 WBA World Beauties Award: Upcoming Activation! 🏰
Reference: 30DA/CT005 – Castillo de la Corbera 🇪🇸
On April 11th, the millennial history of Spain will vibrate through the airwaves once again! Sergio 30DA010 and his friend Pepe will take us into the beating heart of the Castillo de la Corbera, in the province of Valencia, for an activation promising excitement and old-world charm.
🛡️ A Journey Through Time: From the Crescent to the Reconquista
This won’t be just a simple radio operation; it’s a bridge launched across the centuries. Sergio and Pepe will operate from a site that has witnessed the passage of entire civilizations:
Islamic Origins (11th Century): Established as a strategic sentinel for the Kingdom of Valencia.
The Reconquista (1248): Conquered by James I of Aragon, who turned it into a stronghold of Christian power.
Authentic Charm: A witness to the Revolt of the Brotherhoods, the castle today retains a wild and proud appearance—the perfect setting to represent the spirit of the WBA.
🏔️ The Thrill of the Keep: Sergio and Pepe at the Summit
The challenge is set: our operators will climb up to the celoquia, the highest and most noble part of the fortress, positioning themselves right atop the keep (mastio). Transmitting from this height is more than a technical choice; it is a profound interaction with the site itself:
Historical Symbiosis: Surrounded by ancient rammed-earth walls and masonry declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), Sergio and Pepe’s radio signal will become the modern voice of this rocky giant.
Infinite Horizons: While the calls pour in, their eyes will sweep across the iconic Valencian rice fields all the way to the deep blue Mediterranean Sea.
📢 The Significance of the Event:
The WBA (World Beauties Award) celebrates beauty and memory. Seeing Sergio 30DA010 and Pepe activate the Corbera keep means honoring the ancient Valencian frontier, turning a hike into a global cultural event.
