📻 A Special Return: WBA Activation at the Old Island of Montehano

Today, our friend Andoni treated us to an activation filled with meaning and amateur radio passion. The chosen destination was the evocative Old Island of Montehano, a breathtaking location that serves as a privileged observation point for wildlife, especially birdlife. 🦆✨

Immersed in the silence of nature, interrupted only by the calls of birds, Andoni set up his field station focusing on simplicity and efficiency: a single-element Delta Loop. This technical choice proved to be a winner, allowing him to make the most of today’s generous propagation openings. 📡🌤️

But the most emotional aspect was related to the passing of time: Andoni had not activated this location for 30 years. The last time was back in 1996, when he operated under the historic Sugar Delta group label. A circle that closes after three decades, bridging the glorious past of radio with the enthusiasm of the present. 🔄🔙

📊 Activation Log Analysis

The activity was intense and rewarding, with a total of 61 contacts (QSOs) brought home. Here are the highlights from the data analysis:

  • Global Coverage: Despite the field setup, signals traveled incredible distances, reaching Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
  • Focus on Canary Islands (Div. 34): A massive presence from the Canary Islands with 11 contacts, including operators such as 34DA101 (Berto), 34RC24 (Cristo), and 34AT192 (Nando), with signals peaking at 5/7 and 5/9.
  • Top Countries: Great participation from France (Division 14) with 21 stations connected and, of course, from Spain (Division 30) with 13 contacts.
  • Overseas DX: Beautiful long-distance connections with Brazil (3AT303 and 3DA10) and Panama (24EK11), demonstrating the excellent performance of the Delta Loop.
  • Peak Hours: Activity was concentrated between 12:37 and 16:30, taking full advantage of the afternoon propagation peak.

🏁 Conclusion

This activation was not just a technical test, but a true tribute to the beauty of our hobby and the places that host us. Returning to Montehano after thirty years proves that the passion for radio never grows old, just like the spirit of true operators. Congratulations to Andoni for the great work and for the splendid haul of DX contacts! 🏆🌍

🏰 Upcoming WBA World Beauties Award Activation 🏰

We are proud to announce another breathtaking radio event! On April 10th, operator 30DA021 Andoni will take his portable station to the summit of the legendary Montehano Island (Cantabria). Operating under the World Beauties Award (WBA), this activation promises to bridge the gap between modern radio waves and centuries of imperial history.

📡 Activation Details

🏝️ The “Island” of Emperors and Monks

Montehano Island is a place where nature and legend collide. This iconic limestone “green pyramid” rises 186 meters directly from the Santoña Marshes. While now connected to the mainland, it transforms back into an island with the rising tides, standing as a silent sentinel over the Cantabrian coast.

📜 Broadcasting from a Layered History

This activation is a tribute to a site steeped in mystery and power. By setting up a field station here, we are interacting with layers of human history:

  • Imperial Legacy: At the base of the mountain lies the Convent of San Sebastián, the final resting place of Barbara Blomberg, mother of the legendary Don John of Austria.
  • Medieval Strength: Our signals will radiate from near the ruins of the 14th-century Castillo de Montehano, once a fortress guarding the bay.
  • Modern Echoes: The slopes still bear the scars of the Spanish Civil War, with trenches and bunkers carved into the rock, serving as a reminder of the mountain’s eternal strategic importance.

🦅 A Natural Watchtower

As Andoni deploys his antenna, he will be surrounded by the lush holm oak forests of the Natural Park. From this vantage point, the radio waves have a clear path across the Bay of Santoña and out to the Atlantic. It is a location that perfectly embodies the spirit of the World Beauties Award: a mix of architectural heritage, historical depth, and raw natural beauty.
