Why This Activation is Unique

The essence of the World Beauties Award lies in its deep connection to the territory. Activating reference 165DA/CRA011 allows us to narrate the story of S’Incontru across the airwaves:

  • A Centuries-Old Heritage: 🇪🇸 Imported from Spain in the 15th century, the rite depicts the emotional reunion between the Risen Christ and the Virgin Mary.
  • Symbolism & Emotion: 🎭 The climax occurs when Mary’s black mourning veil falls to reveal a festive gown. This explosion of joy and the thunderous applause of the faithful is the spirit we aim to carry through every QSO.
  • Faith & Culture: ⛪ While radio waves connect continents, this rite connects Sardinian popular faith with its Iberian roots, creating a magical atmosphere that surrounds the station during the activity.

By participating in this activation, you aren’t just “logging a point”—you are becoming part of a millennial narrative celebrating rebirth and human connection. 🤝❤️

🌸 Happy Easter and Good DX to everyone from the WBA Team! 🐧 Portoscuso – April 5th, 2026

S’Incontru: A Fascinating Easter Rite 🕊️

S’Incontru (The Encounter) is a captivating Easter rite, presumably of Spanish origin and imported in the 15th century, depicting the meeting between the Risen Christ and His Mother, Mary. It takes place on Easter Sunday morning with a procession and ceremonial bows between the two statues, often accompanied by the changing of the Virgin’s attire from mourning black to festive colors. ✨

Key Highlights of the Tradition 📍

  • Iberian Origins: 🇪spaña The rite developed during the Spanish dominion between the 15th and 17th centuries, blending liturgy with local traditions, particularly in the Campidano and Nuoro areas.
  • Symbolism: ✝️ This tradition celebrates the delight and joy of the Resurrection through the reunion of the Madonna and Her Son, a narrative found in the apocryphal gospels.
  • The Procession: 👣 Two distinct processions—one with the Risen Christ and the other with the Mourning Madonna—start from different points; in Portoscuso, they depart from San Giovanni Battista and Santa Maria Vergine d’Itria, converging in Piazza Giovanni XXIII.
  • The Climax: 🎭 The peak of S’Incontru is marked by three bows of the statues; Mary’s black veil falls to reveal a joyful gown 👗 amidst the applause of the faithful. 👏

The Origins of S’Incontru 📜

While it is likely that the Spaniards introduced this ceremony, a peculiar detail remains: there is no reference to this meeting in the New Testament. Scripture records Jesus appearing to many others, such as Mary Magdalene and the Apostles ($1$ Cor $15:6$). However, the early Church—and Eastern Fathers like St. Ephrem—always believed Jesus appeared to His Mother first. ⛪

Today, this theme remains a staple of Easter in Spanish cities like Malaga and Seville, while in Italy, it is deeply rooted in Sardinia and throughout the Center-South (Abruzzo and Calabria). 🇮🇹

The Theological Perspective 💡

Pope John Paul II addressed this in 1997, noting that the silence of the Scriptures “must not lead to the conclusion that Christ did not appear to Mary.”

“The Virgin, present in the first community of disciples ($Acts$ $1:14$), how could she have been excluded from the number of those who encountered her divine Son?” 🤔

The Pope suggested that Mary’s absence from the tomb at dawn ($Mk$ $16:1$) might actually be proof that she had already met Him. As a witness at Calvary ($Jn$ $19:25$) and Pentecost, she was the privileged witness of the entire Paschal Mystery. 🌟

In Portoscuso, the faithful have no doubts, and they will show it on Easter Sunday morning. 🕊️
