📻 WBA Activation Report: Between History, Cinema, and Radio Waves 🌊

Today was a truly unforgettable day of radio for the World Beauties Award (WBA) circuit. The setting? A majestic Nuraghe surrounded by the wild greenery of our Sardinia.

Arrival and a “Cinematic” Surprise 🎬

As soon as Giacomino and I reached the parking lot near the Nuraghe, we headed out for a site survey to find the perfect spot. To our surprise, we walked right into a film set! A crew was shooting a commercial with actors dressed in traditional Sardinian costumes. We managed to snap a few evocative photos of this timeless scene before moving on to ensure we wouldn’t disturb their work.

Setup Immersed in Nature 🍃

I slowly moved the gear to a clearing about 100 meters from the monument. I chose a strategic spot where the trees and bushes provided a natural shield against the prevailing wind. Once the field station was set up, we were ready to put the reference on the air!

The Big Catch: 341DA/0 Darren 🎯

Before officially starting the activation, the clusters showed that Darren had begun his DX expedition as 341DA/0. I couldn’t miss the chance: I immediately jumped to 27.610 (split .615). After about 5 calls, I finally broke through! Darren was coming in strong, between 5/7 and 5/9 with a bit of QSB, antenna beamed between 60 and 90 degrees. That success was a massive boost to start the day!

The Activation: The Log Takes Flight ✈️

Around 11:00 UTC, I prepared the Live Log and began the activation. Propagation was wide open toward the East, with great backscatter toward the West.

  • Phase One: The first 50 QSOs were quickly logged with Europe, Oceania, and Asia.
  • Lunch Break & Shift in Propagation: After a quick sandwich, the skip finally opened to the West (the Americas). Additionally, short-skip conditions kicked in for Northern Europe and the UK, making the log fill up rapidly.

Culture and History 🗿

Once the activation was over, Giacomino and I went to visit the Nuraghe. We immersed ourselves in its millennial history—a truly great experience that reminded us why we love activating these historic sites.

Conclusion 🏁

We are heading home with excellent results and a wealth of memories. It was a perfect day: technical radio satisfaction, rare contacts, an unexpected encounter with Sardinian tradition, and the timeless beauty of our archaeological heritage. Thanks to all the hunters who chased us!

Until the next activation! 73! 🎙️📡

🏛️ WBA – World Beauties Award: Mission Nuraghe Sa Domu ’E S’Orcu 🏛️

The journey of 165DA101 Alex continues under the banner of history and beauty. Tomorrow, April 2nd, 2026, 11-meter radio waves will cross the boundaries of time, broadcasting from a place steeped in legend and mystery: the Nuraghe Sa Domu ’E S’Orcu in Sarroch (CA), Sardinia.

📍 The Location: A Bastion Between Sky and Sea

Perched on the Sa Punta hill, overlooking the coastline, this monument is far more than just a stone structure. It is a complex nuraghe featuring two towers and an internal courtyard, built with cyclopean blocks that have defied the millennia.

Why this activation is extraordinary:

  • Cultural Fusion: Archaeological excavations here revealed Mycenaean pottery fragments—proof that this site was a Mediterranean crossroads as far back as the Bronze Age. Activating from here symbolically connects the ancient mariners of the past with today’s “explorers of the ether.”
  • Avant-garde Architecture: The discovery of finely worked sandstone blocks suggests the towers once featured projecting terraces—a masterpiece of Nuragic engineering.
  • The “Field” Experience: We will set up our portable station within the open-access site. We won’t just be “near” the monument; we will be part of its atmosphere, transmitting surrounded by the silence of ancient stones.

🌍 The Importance of the World Beauties Award

The WBA is more than just a radio competition; it is a bridge between technology and heritage. Bringing a radio station inside Sa Domu ’E S’Orcu (The House of the Ogre) means giving a voice to stones that have been silent for centuries, promoting Sardinian culture and tourism on a global scale. Every QSO will be a piece of history carried by the wind.

Get your radios ready, the hunt for reference NU004 is about to begin!

The monument sits on a hillside at Sa Punta, not far from the sea.

This is a Nuraghe with two towers and an internal courtyard. The blocks used to create the parts of the Nuraghe still visible are huge and roughly cut. That said, the discovery, amidst the crumbled buildings of some well-built wedged sandstone ashlars (other similar ones can be seen in Antigori and amidst the crumbled ruins of the Nuraghe Mereu), give us reason to believe that the towers finished further up with a worked ashlar coping, most likely used to build the typical support shelves for the protruding terrace. During the excavation work some fragments of Mycenaean ceramic were uncovered as well as typical Nuragic ceramics.

Follow the road signs out of Sarroch and when you reach the public park turn right onto a dirt track which runs around the hillside. From this point onwards, the Nuraghe is clearly visible. Follow the road and you come to a pathway which you can walk along for about 300 metres.  https://idese.cultura.gov.it/en/place/nuraghe-sa-domu-e-sorcu/
