📡 WBA Activation Alert: 165DA/CH006 – Saint Constantine Sanctuary (Sedilo) 📡Tomorrow, March 28, 2026, the DA-RC team moves to the beating heart of central Sardinia for a new stage of the World Beauties Award! Operator 165DA101 Alex will bring to the airwaves the voice of one of the most iconic and spiritually charged sites on the entire island: the Sanctuary of Saint Constantine the Emperor in Sedilo (Oristano Province). 🇮🇹🌵🏛️ A Place Where Time Stands StillActivating reference 165DA/CH006 is not just a radio exercise; it is a total immersion into centuries of history. The Sanctuary, situated in a dominant position overlooking the Tirso river valley, is a jewel of Gothic-Catalan architecture (dating back to the 16th century) merged with imposing 18th-century renovations. The most fascinating architectural feature is the so-called “Su Forte”: a massive bastioned body built to support the structure, giving the church the appearance of a spiritual fortress. 🏰✨🐎 The Eclipse of Time: The “Ardia” of SediloBeing present at this site means walking the same ground where every July, the spectacular Ardia is unleashed—a daring horse race commemorating the Battle of Milvian Bridge and Constantine’s victory over Maxentius. The activation takes place right next to the Ardia path and the “Cumbessias” (the stone porches designed to welcome pilgrims), creating an invisible bridge between radio waves and the shouts of devotion that have animated this natural amphitheater for centuries. 🏇🔥📻 Technical Details of the Operation:Reference: 165DA/CH006 (World Beauties Award)Scores: 1 Pt (Hunter) / 3 Pts (Activator)Setup: 3 EL. The original structure of the church dates back to the mid-16th century and reflects the typical styles of Gothic-Catalan architecture. Of this first construction, in addition to the sacristy walls, the capilla mayor remains, featuring a quadrangular plan, a pointed access arch, and ribbed cross-vaults resting on variously carved corbels.
The church we see today is the result of a radical expansion and renovation project begun in the second half of the 18th century. This led to the lengthening of the nave and the subsequent construction of the massive bastioned body—known as su forte—which supports the weight of the new structure and creates a sort of parvis in front of the entrance. The work must have been completed by 1789, a date deduced from two plaques embedded beside the entrance portal and, inside, on the second pillar to the right.
Architectural Features
The Facade: A wide, smooth rectangular front with a significant horizontal emphasis, topped by a curvilinear pediment. it is built with perfectly squared blocks of reddish vulcanite.
The Portal: A gabled entrance framed by two columns on classical-style plinths, mirrored by three small shell-shaped niches surrounding it.
The Interior: Consists of a single nave with a barrel vault and side chapels opening onto the hall via semicircular arches supported by powerful quadrangular pillars.
The Surrounding Complex
From an architectural perspective—especially considering the landscape—the “folk” arrangement of the complex is perhaps even more interesting and well-structured. It includes:
The enclosure with its large gates.
The rows of trees and stone seating.
The long porticos designed for pilgrims and merchants.
The circular area for penitents adjacent to the small road where the “Ardia” takes place every year between July 5th and 7th—the daring horse race held in honor of Saint Constantine. https://www.sardegnaturismo.it/it/esplora/santuario-di-san-costantino-imperatore
