The Nuraghe Ponte (Dualchi)
The Nuraghe Ponte (or Pontes) is located a short distance from the Frenegarzu archaeological complex. It consists of a circular tower built at its base with large, roughly-hewn polyhedral blocks. Resting upon these are well-crafted stones that decrease in size as they rise toward the first-floor window level; from this height upward, the blocks regain volume, becoming perfectly squared in the final courses.
The entrance to the building faces southeast and features a quadrangular opening. It is characterized by a remarkable lintel (measuring 3.65 m in length, 1.50 m in width, and 1.10 m in thickness). This lintel is meticulously worked, with a slightly curved face that follows the circular profile of the tower; its weight is estimated to be approximately 17 tons (author’s note).
The corridor behind the entrance, which flares toward the interior and features a truncated-ogival section, contains the opposing entrances to the staircase (on the left) and the niche (on the right). The staircase chamber has an ogival section and is equipped with 26 steps. The entrance corridor leads into the central chamber, where the “tholos” (dome) remains fully intact.
Running parallel to the jambs and on the lintel of the large window is a rabbet (recess) designed to house a closing hatch. This hatch would have been secured by a bar originally inserted into three holes drilled into the jambs.
The nuraghe has been documented since the 19th century.
