The Location and Scenery 📸 Upon our arrival, as soon as we stepped out of the car, we were met with an extraordinary sight: a stunning jagged coastline of rare beauty, where dark rocks sculpted by the sea create a breathtaking contrast with the deep blue water. The coastline facing the Mangiabarche Lighthouse is a succession of inlets and rugged cliffs—a wild landscape that conveys the full power of the elements. 🌬️
The biggest surprise, however, was the chosen location for setting up our field station. We positioned ourselves exactly on top of the SR311 anti-aircraft battery 🎖️. This historical structure, a silent witness to coastal defense with its still-visible concrete platforms, provided us with a solid operational base and a unique perspective on the surrounding area. From this elevated and history-filled position, we enjoyed a privileged view directly facing the Mangiabarche Lighthouse, which stood solitary amidst the waves. 🗼

Connection Progression (Analysis of Column C): 📈 Examining the temporal progression and Signal Reports (RST), a very dynamic start is evident:
- 🌅 The Opening (10:21 UTC): Operations began with immediately strong signals (5/5 and 5/9) towards Europe and Africa (e.g., 165AT131 and 56LR555).
- 🚀 The Morning Peak: Between 10:20 and 11:30, propagation was excellent towards Europe (France, England, Poland) with consistent 5/9 signals. During this window, we also reached Oceania (91AT109 at 10:31) and South America (4AT109 at 10:51).
- 🌏 Central Phase and DX: Around 11:30–12:00, we established great contacts with Asia (115TRC707) and consolidated connections with North America (24EK011).
- 🌇 The Closing (14:00 UTC): The activation concluded with a strong presence from South America (Brazil) and a final European touch from Denmark (47TL058) at 14:09, maintaining reports of 5/5 and 5/3 despite the long day.
It was an unforgettable experience that combined the fascination of military history with the natural beauty of the Sardinian coast, supported by propagation that allowed us to circle the globe from the top of an anti-aircraft battery. ⚡📻
Located approximately 400 meters off the island of Sant’Antioco. Built around 1935, the lighthouse warns sailors approaching from the Spanish coast and the island of San Pietro of the presence of a particularly dangerous stretch of sea. Between the island of Sant’Antioco and the lighthouse rock, there are reefs and shoals emerging from the sea, which still pose a dangerous threat today. Added to this is the strong mistral wind that blows from the Atlantic in winter, which pushes boats toward the rocks, aided by the currents of the narrow stretch of sea.
According to legend, the name Mangiabarche (Boat Eater) derives from the appearance of the shoals and rocks that are sold, which resemble the teeth of a sea monster.
The lighthouse was powered by propane until 1970, when it was decided to replace the eye’s power supply with photovoltaic panels. Furthermore, in 2000 it underwent a major restoration. https://idese.cultura.gov.it/place/faro-mangiabarche/
