The Pozón de la Yesera (Gypsum Pool) originated from an old gypsum quarry. When the quarry was abandoned, the water table rose in the extraction area, creating the pool and the Romanillo stream. This turned the pool and surrounding areas into an illegal dumping ground for all kinds of waste, rubble, and garbage from various sources.
The restoration project and its implementation are being carried out by the Nature and Man Foundation through a grant from the Cantabria Regional Government’s Department of the Environment. The goal is to environmentally restore the area and make it accessible to the public. Currently, all restoration work is complete, and the area is undergoing ecological recovery.
The Pozón de la Yesera and its surroundings cover an area of approximately 47,000 m², of which 5,100 m² comprise the water surface. To allow visitors to enjoy the area and learn about the existing habitats, a short trail of approximately 1,100 meters has been created, running the length of the entire area.
In the restored area, you can observe several habitats characteristic of Cantabria: the riparian forest with its willows, ash trees, and hawthorns; the marsh vegetation of the waterlogged areas with reeds, rushes, and cattails; and the mixed Cantabrian forest.
