Lake Forru, or Stagno ‘e Forru, is a wetland in the municipality of Portoscuso, located along the southwest coast of Sardinia.
Historically considered a “pond,” it was recently classified as a lake following studies conducted by the University of Sassari. This reclassification hypothetically makes it the second-largest natural lake in Sardinia, after Lake Baratz in the Sassari area.
The wetland is a body of water approximately 400 meters in diameter and approximately 2.5 meters deep. As the crow flies, it is approximately 500 meters from the coast.
The origin of the basin is linked to ancient volcanism, and the reservoir represents a “caldera,” an ancient volcanic conduit subsequently filled by rainwater and surface runoff.
Regardless of its classification, whether pond or lake, the area has considerable naturalistic value due to its habitats and the highly interesting fauna and flora species recognized here. These are important parameters for the conservation of biodiversity in a part of the island subject to strong human influences.
In fact, together with the nearby Bau Cerbus lagoon, Lake Forru is protected under the European Commission’s environmental directives.
