The History of Saint Fromond
Saint Fromond, Bishop of Coutances, founded a community here around 650 and was buried on-site following his death. His tomb subsequently became a place of pilgrimage, and his name was given to the monastery. After the Viking raids that destroyed this initial settlement, a Benedictine priory—dependent on the Abbey of Cerisy—was established.
The church, originally built in the 12th century, saw its choir rebuilt in the 15th century in the Flamboyant Gothic style; however, the Romanesque nave was destroyed in the 18th century. What remains of the original Romanesque church are the cylindrical apse and the portal of the former nave.
The monument was placed in great peril during the liberation battles of the summer of 1944, but it was saved by Abbé Morel, the parish priest at the time, who dedicated himself to its preservation and restoration. This charming church, now protected, still overlooks the Vire plain.
Inside, several interesting 15th-century furnishings are worth noting, such as the baptismal fonts, a Virgin and Child, two altar tables, and the tombstone of Prior Joachim de Mathan.
On the portal of the former nave, a St. Andrew’s Cross is carved. Visitors from the town of Guardia Sanframondi (Campania, Italy) saw this as the origin of the Sanframondo family, whose coat of arms featured the St. Andrew’s Cross and who held great power in Italy between the 13th and 15th centuries. https://www.abbayes-normandie.com/abbaye/abbatiale-de-saint-fromond/
