The Punta Abona Lighthouse is located in the municipality of Arico, on the southeastern coast of Tenerife, between the towns of Abades and Porís de Abona. The current structure is the second to be built on this site:
History: The original lighthouse was inaugurated in 1902 to aid navigation between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the western Canary Islands. In the 1970s, because the light beam was too low (only 6.5 meters above the ground), a new tower was commissioned.
Current Features: Inaugurated in 1978, the modern tower is a cylindrical concrete structure painted with red and white horizontal stripes. It stands 39 meters tall and projects light from a focal height of 54 meters above sea level, with a range of approximately 17 nautical miles. It emits a pattern of 3 white flashes every 20 seconds.
Present State: Next to the modern tower, the old rectangular building of the first lighthouse still stands, preserving part of its original lantern. There are ongoing plans to convert the old keeper’s house into an ethnographic museum and restaurant.
