The Savoy fort stands on the highest point of the town, overlooking the necropolis and the settlement all the way to the sea. Historically, the area must have been considered strategically important, as the construction occupies and partially incorporates a Punic and Nuragic site.
Designed by Sardinian Artillery Officer Ambrogio Capson to defend the town from Barbary raids, the military garrison dates back to 1813-15. During this period, its defensive function was required only once, in 1815, during the last Barbary raid; however, on this occasion, the fort was not yet completed and, despite its determined defense, fell under attack. Following the intervention of the European powers, the raids were stopped and the fort was consequently abandoned.
The fort consists of several buildings surrounding a central paved courtyard, which housed the sea-facing cannon and a cistern; one of the buildings housed the powder magazine, while the entrance was protected by a sentry box and arrow slits.
