The Tower of Hercules (Torre de Hércules) is one of Spain’s most iconic monuments and a masterpiece of ancient engineering.
What it is: Located in A Coruña, Galicia, it is the world’s oldest Roman lighthouse still in use. Built in the 2nd century AD, it serves as a sentinel overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Key Features: It stands approximately 55 meters tall. While its current exterior reflects an 18th-century neoclassical restoration, the internal core remains the original Roman structure.
UNESCO World Heritage: It was designated a World Heritage site in 2009 due to its exceptional historical and architectural value.
The Legend: Its name comes from the myth that Hercules buried the head of the giant Geryon on this spot after defeating him in battle.
