Kumaki Dobrej is an important protected natural area located in Poland, specifically in the Lower Silesia (Dolny Śląsk) region, a few kilometers northeast of Wrocław.
What it is and where it is located
Protection status: It is a Natura 2000 network site (code PLH020078).
Location: It extends along the Dobra River valley, between the towns of Bartków, Dobrzeń, Dąbrowica, and Pawłowice. It covers an area of approximately 2,094 hectares.
Landscape: The area is characterized by wetlands, floodplains, artificial fishponds, and oak and hornbeam forests.
Why it is famous (“Kumaki”)
The name comes from the Polish word “Kumak”, which refers to the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), a small, rare, and protected amphibian. The “Kumaki Dobrej” area (which literally means “The Fire-bellied Toads of the Dobra”) was established specifically to protect:
Amphibians: In addition to the fire-bellied toad, it is a vital habitat for the great crested newt.
Rare insects: The old oaks in the area host rare species such as the Great Capricorn beetle and the Hermit beetle.
Flora: The site features centuries-old oaks declared natural monuments and wet meadows that are highly valuable from a botanical perspective. https://przyrodniczo.pl/natura-2000/kumaki-dobrej/
