The Aragonese tower of Torregrande was built by order of the Spanish Viceroy Charles V (1537), initially called the Tower of the “puerto de Oristan” (1639), only during the Savoy era did it take on its current name: “Grande de Oristan”, Tower of Oristano and Gran Torre. It is the largest coastal tower in Sardinia, having originally been conceived as a “torre de armas”, that is, a “stalwart” tower, suitable for heavy defence. Although begun in the first half of the 16th century, the tower is of Aragonese design, as evidenced by the characteristics of the transitional architecture: from the masonry sentry box above the entrance door to the positioning of the guns. It is equipped with upper gun ports in barbette, that is, the uncovered battery, and lower gun ports, the loopholes, positioned in a casemate, that is, the covered, bomb-proof room. It was designed as a fortress with sighting and coastal defence functions. Indeed, its cannons pounded the “Port” and the mouth of the Tirso River to prevent enemy ships from sailing upstream towards the city. It is the largest of the 105 towers along the Sardinian coast. The massive tower, over three meters thick, could house a garrison of up to twenty soldiers ready to withstand a siege lasting several days. Cylindrical in shape, it has a diameter of 20 meters and a height of approximately 18 meters from the ground. It is spread over two levels; the first floor, 8 meters above ground, houses four large artillery pieces aimed toward the sea and other directions. On the upper floor, there is a gallery-shaped room for additional manually operated firearms.

From the top of the tower, one could observe the entire Gulf of Oristano and maintain contact with the towers of San Giovanni (Cabras), Marceddi, and Capo Frasca (Arbus), as well as the city of Oristano and surrounding villages. In the 19th century, a residential building was built on the summit to house the “Farista” staff, having previously been used as a semaphore station by the military.  https://www.marecalmo.org/en/2018/12/15/la-gran-torre-di-oristano-storia-di-un-monumento-ancora-tutto-da-scoprire/.  https://youtu.be/R1tmUYZSt4M?si=AIlaP8RAY_npEify
