The Church of Sant’Elia is located in the countryside of Nuxis.
Despite its modest size, it is one of the most important Byzantine buildings in southern Sardinia and dates back to between the 9th and 10th centuries.
The structure has a Greek cross plan with a small dome at the intersection of the arms.
The building’s current appearance is due to a restoration of some parts dating back to 1909, following the collapse of the dome and the collapse of the southwest arm.
The dome was rebuilt in an elongated shape, giving it the shape of a “pyramidal vault.” It rests on a truncated pyramidal drum and today, despite being the most recent part, constitutes the building’s most distinctive element.
The southwest wing, which houses the current entrance, was rebuilt slightly shorter and a bell gable with a curved crown was added.
It is hypothesized that the west wing, which houses a side entrance, originally constituted the main façade with a traditional east-west orientation. Indeed, the masonry of this wing most closely resembles the original structure due to the meticulous workmanship and spatial distribution of the ashlars.
The interior is characterized by a severe simplicity. The four wings extending from the domed space feature a barrel vault.
