The Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen’s Island), officially called Isola Superiore, is a jewel of Lake Maggiore and the only one of the Borromean Islands to be permanently inhabited, maintaining a unique and authentic atmosphere.🎣 A Village Suspended on the Water * Size and Shape: It is a small strip of land, about 350 meters long and a hundred meters wide, which develops in an elongated and picturesque shape. * Characteristic Architecture: The village is a charming maze of narrow, winding alleys that open onto a small square. The houses are typically multi-story, built to make the best use of the limited available space. Many homes are recognizable by the long wooden balconies that jut out, historically used by islanders to dry the fish. * Atmosphere: Walking through the alleys is like taking a step back in time. Although it is now a popular tourist destination, the island retains its heart as an ancient fishing village, a tradition that no more than twenty people still pass down.⛪ Places of Interest and Daily Life * The Church of San Vittore: At the center of the island stands the evocative Church of San Vittore, dating back to the 11th century and featuring 16th-century frescoes. It is a focal point for the community and a place of great charm. * The Lakeside Promenade: Walking along the perimeter, you encounter several small harbors where the residents’ small boats dock, an image that underlines the islanders’ unbreakable bond with the water and fishing.
