The Spanish Tower of Santa Maria Navarrese is clear evidence of the acute problem of Saracen pirate raids, which frequently harassed the stretch of coast between Villaputzu and Arbatax, even in this area. Today, there are as many as 93 coastal towers along the Sardinian coast: the first were built during the reign of Charles V (1516-1556) in the mid-16th century, but it was under his successor Philip II (1556-1598) that the defensive system was institutionalized, with the creation, in 1581, of a special “Royal Administration of Towers”, which, in addition to overseeing the design and construction of new towers, was also responsible for managing the detailed expenses and repairs of existing ones. The Spanish Tower of Santa Maria, curiously known as the “Saracen Tower” despite being built to ward off pirates, was built around 1591, according to historians, when there were about forty towers along the Sardinian coast. Built on the small promontory separating the Central Beach from the San Giovanni Beach, the tower has a direct visual connection with the one in Arbatax, a logistical solution that allowed the garrisons serving in both buildings to control the entire gulf. According to documents from the “Royal Administration of the Towers,” these two were among those armed with cannons. The soldiers serving at the coastal towers were required to be on alert both day and night, as specified in a “Budget on the Administration of the Towers,” dated January 29, 1798, which recommended that “small wood be kept ready for use on the terrace in case of sightings, so as to be able to make fire signals at night and smoke signals during the day.”

In 1833, Angius found the tower of Santa Maria Navarrese still armed and “guarded by a lord with an artilleryman and a few soldiers.” The tower, a truncated cone in shape, features a domed vault with a pillar and extends over three levels. On the ground floor, a door leads to a large hall, while the first and second floors are reached via an external staircase that ends in front of the first-floor entrance door. The second floor can be reached via a narrow staircase against the wall; another set of steps leads to the terrace. In the 1960s, the tower was converted into an office and was used for a long time by the Guardia di Finanza. Since the 1980s, thanks in part to a popular uprising, the tower has returned to the control of the Municipality of Baunei. Currently, it can only be visited during exhibitions and displays.  https://www.turismobaunei.eu/services/la-torre-spagnola
