The province of Syracuse is home to numerous important archaeological sites. One of the most important, yet also the least known to mass tourism, is the site of the ancient Greek colony of Megara Iblea. The archaeological area is located north of Syracuse, between the municipalities of Priolo Gargallo and Augusta. A once-wonderful location, directly overlooking the sea, but today, unfortunately, unfortunate as it falls within the industrial hub. On that site, in 728 BC, as the historian Thucydides tells us, colonists from Megara Nisea, led by the ecist Lamis, founded their city. Megara would later become the birthplace of another Sicilian city: Selinunte. Unfortunately, the city did not have a long and prosperous life, as it was destroyed first in the 5th century BC by the Syracusan tyrant Gelon, and then definitively in 214 BC. by Roman troops commanded by the consul Marcellus. Ironically, its very brief history has been a source of great fortune for archaeologists. Aside from a few sporadic farms during the Roman era, no other city has arisen on the site in the centuries since. Therefore, nothing has been built upon the ruins, allowing archaeologists to rediscover the remains of the city as it was in the first centuries of its existence. Megara Hyblaea is crucial precisely for this reason: we won’t find any great monuments there, but rather small houses, shops, and narrow streets that, however, allow us to understand the life of the first, poor settlers. https://www.hermes-sicily.com/informazioni-turistiche/visitare-megara-iblea.php.
