The Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Melilli, with the adjoining Capuchin friary, is a significant religious and historical complex in the city. Here are some details about its history, architecture, and artistic heritage.History * Foundation: The first stone for the friary was laid on March 19, 1617, by Don Antonio Parisi. The religious community settled in 1620, with Father Gianbattista from Castrogiovanni as the first guardian. * 1693 Earthquake: The complex was severely damaged by the devastating earthquake of 1693, which almost completely destroyed the building and caused the deaths of numerous friars, including the guardian, Fr. Felice from Melilli. * Post-Earthquake Period and Development: During the 18th century, the friary and the church were rebuilt and enriched. In 1732, Father Angelo Gagliano from Mazzarino created an artistic tabernacle for the Blessed Sacrament and the inlaid altars of the church, possibly in collaboration with the Syracusan architect Nicolò Sapia. * Suppressions and Rebirth: Following the suppression of religious orders in 1866, the building was expropriated, but the friars managed to buy it back in 1879. * 1990 Earthquake: The earthquake on December 13, 1990, also caused damage to the complex, necessitating major restoration and consolidation works that have restored the entire structure to its original splendor.Architecture and Works of Art * Structure: The church, dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, adheres to the Franciscan style with a single nave and two side chapels. * Altars: There are five altars. The main altar is decorated with a work by a Messinese painter depicting the Adoration of the Magi. The altars and the tabernacle are of considerable value, attributed to Father Angelo from Mazzarino. * Statues: Among the most precious works is a small but very devout wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception, known as “a Maculatedda.” * Frescoes and Paintings: In 1912, A. De Gregorio created three frescoes on the church’s vault, including one depicting St. Michael the Archangel defeating Lucifer.The Capuchin friary in Melilli is a place of great historical and religious importance for the local community.
