The SarralĂ Tower (of SarralĂ or San Giovanni) is located in the coastal strip of the Municipality of Tertenia.
After the establishment of the Tower Administration, for over a century and a half, the area between Capo San Lorenzo del Salto di Quirra and the BarĂŹ Tower remained without any fortified system.
Only in the 18th century was it proposed to build a bastion at Capo Sferracavallo to complete the signal transmission system between Sarrabus and Ogliastra and, above all, to monitor the “Cala Francese” below, frequented by the Moors.
The decision was approved in 1764; Work began immediately under the direction of Belgrano di Famolasco and lasted until 1767.
It is considered the most famous tower in Ogliastra due to the historical event dating back to July 17, 1812, when a small garrison managed to resist the Barbary pirates. The tower was besieged and partially destroyed by Tunisian warships that had previously attacked the towers of Porto Giunco, Cavoli, and Serpentara. For about 10 hours, the alcaide and the tower guards resisted until the arrival of a contingent of militiamen who finally repelled the Moors.
In 1829, some repairs were carried out, and after 1851, the tower was abandoned.
During World War II, it was converted to guard against landings. This renovation and adaptation work prevents a proper understanding of the original structures: it involved the transformation of the interior spaces to create walkways with numerous arrow slits.
The tower has a truncated cone shape. The original entrance opened approximately 4.5 meters above the ground.
Of the original structure, the terrace is the part that has undergone the least modifications. Here, in fact, you can still see the embrasures with battlements, the spaces reserved for the sentry boxes, and the shoveling for the crescent. https://idese.cultura.gov.it/place/torre-di-sarrala
