Mount Lauro is the highest peak in the Hyblaean Mountains, located in southeastern Sicily. Its summit, at 987 meters (3,238 feet) above sea level, is within the territory of Buccheri.Geologically, Mount Lauro is an ancient, extinct underwater volcano that emerged during the Miocene epoch due to movements in the Earth’s crust. This volcanic origin gives the landscape unique features.Despite the presence of numerous parabolic antennas on its summit, the mountain maintains a strong connection with nature, hosting a rich variety of flora and fauna. Its slopes extend across the provinces of Syracuse, Catania, and Ragusa. The name “Lauro” likely comes from the presence of numerous laurel trees in the past.The surrounding area is characterized by coniferous forests and a evocative atmosphere, especially during the winter fogs, which lend it an almost “extraterrestrial” appearance. The mountain also hosts ancient “neviere,” dome-shaped structures used in the past to preserve snow and produce ice.The Anapo River, one of Sicily’s main waterways, originates from its slopes, carving deep “cave” (canyons) into the Hyblaean landscape.
