The **Ciane River and Saline of Syracuse Oriented Nature Reserve** is a protected area located near Syracuse, Sicily. It’s a place of great naturalistic interest, known primarily for two reasons:
* **Papyrus:** The reserve is the only place in Europe, besides a few locations in Egypt and Israel, where **papyrus** (*Cyperus papyrus*) grows naturally. This plant, which can reach 4 meters in height, creates a thick and striking “forest” along the riverbanks.
* **Wildlife:** The area is an important habitat for many species of aquatic birds, such as the grey heron, common coot, and little grebe. The former salt pans, which are part of the reserve, are also a crucial area for migratory birds to rest and feed.
The Ciane River, which gives the reserve its name, has its source at the foot of the Hyblaean Mountains and flows into the Porto Grande of Syracuse.
