The area called Cugnicello in the territory of Melilli includes a small necropolis attributable to the ancient Bronze Age and the Castelluccio culture for the typology
of the architecture of the artificial cave tombs. The necropolis spreads along the eastern edge of the hill that surrounds the plateau and the tombs are located at a
certain distance from each other. A part of the necropolis may have been destroyed by the construction of the wide road that leads to the top of the plateau;
a tomb also peeps out above the road surface at a height of about 4 meters.
Of particular importance is the discovery of a monumental complex consisting of four tombs with an enlarged facade which share a multi-celled pavilion
punctuated by semi-pillars also worked on the front face, the complex therefore seems to be part of a single excavation project. Of great importance are the
two central tombs which show an accessory decoration consisting of the engraving of a trilith around the opening. The exceptional preservation of the
rocky surface makes the precision of the engraving of this emblematic representation clearly legible, which could certainly have
templar and cult references, perhaps in connection with Maltese architecture. The representation is very similar to that visible in the monumental tomb of Petraro where here the
trilith is carved in high relief but shares its geometry and proportions.
Between the two central tombs, the one on the right also has a basal step and an engraved frame, but not a trilith, visible in the opening of the burial cell of the
anticella.
On the walls, several more recent quadrangular holes are visible, indicating a reuse for purposes of shelter for animals or other.
The upper part of the pavilions has suffered serious rock detachments in relatively recent times, probably due to the action of roots infiltrated into points of the rock that were already damaged.
