In Bolotana, in the center of Sardinia, a garden of native plants flanked by exotic varieties and unique tree crosses frames a beautiful English villa
A late 19th century landed property has evolved, over the decades, from a farm to a naturalistic oasis, with a lush garden of plant varieties of every species. Extending for four hectares between the Marghine reliefs and the Campeda plateau, it is the legacy left by a Welsh engineer, who arrived on the island in 1863 to design the railway network (Cagliari-Olbia and Chilivani-Porto Torres), built by the Italian-English company ‘Compagnia per le ferrovie reali sarde’. The famous character is Benjamin Piercy, a powerful and very rich man, in love with Sardinia and kissed by fortune, at least until he fell ill during a banquet that took his life (1888). In exchange for his work on the largest public work in Sardinia (up until then), he also received various lands in the Bolotana area, where he built, with an investment of over a million lire, an astonishing sum for the time, a modern company, defined as a ‘monument erected to agriculture’.
On the Badde Salighes estate (the valley of the willows), he also built a majestic English-style villa, a family home, where people lived in a luxurious atmosphere with constant parties between English and Italian nobles: it is said that Umberto di Savoia, the future king of Italy, was a regular visitor. The rural residence, built between 1879 and 1882, is developed on three levels with a quadrangular plan. The four vertices are surrounded by turrets, covered by metal domes on which a small iron pinnacle stands out. Inside the villa you will notice paintings that embellish the rooms on the ground floor. After the 2010 restoration, it is open to visitors along with the enchanting garden that surrounds it, almost a botanical garden, which derives from Piercy’s love for nature. Wandering among maples, holly, chestnut trees, holm oaks and downy oaks, you will also admire exotic species, a legacy of the British engineer’s travels to various countries around the world. The garden is home to libocedron, Himalayan thuja, Spanish fir, Balearic boxwood, Lawson cypress and other rare plants. The park is also in English style, embellished, a short distance from the villa, by a swimming pool surrounded by trees.
Among Piercy’s legacies, passed on to his son and expropriated in the mid-20th century, there are the splendid villa, the garden and even a town, Chilivani (a hamlet of Ozieri), an important railway hub. The largest livestock farm in the Mediterranean had been started on the thousand hectares of his company: numerous employees worked there and lodged, with their families, in the villages of Badde Salighes and Padru Mannu, where a dairy was built equipped with innovative systems. It is no coincidence that Piercy’s figure is closely linked to the nascent intensive agriculture and livestock industry of Bolotana, a town surrounded by fertile land, which, alongside the agricultural tradition, has preserved the art of weaving, especially carpets. https://www.sardegnaturismo.it/it/esplora/villa-piercy
