Almost a basin, of great scenic beauty, it is enclosed to the east by the Benaglia hill, to the west by the Allegrezza woods, to the north by the Bastia and San Vigilio hills and to the south it widens towards the Longuelo district.
The Benaglia hill separates it from the amphitheatre on which Bergamo Alta stands, but still allows a view of it.
A road network, which has its linchpin in the monastery, crosses it, connecting it to the east with the city of Bergamo, to the west with the San Martino Valley and to the south with Longuelo and the Lower City.
From the valley, through Borgo Canale, you can reach the Upper City with a panoramic road that offers, to the south, a wide view of the Bergamo plain. The entrance to the Upper City is through Porta Sant’Alessandro, passing the city’s medieval defensive system.
The valley’s southern exposure has favored the development of agricultural activities centered, since the 12th century, on the Astino monastery which has been its driving force.
From a pedological point of view, the valley is of a colluvial type[2] while the hills are covered with eluvial material[3].
