Near the thermae area, there is a road that leads to a hill where the recently restored Monreale castle stands. The name of the founder is uncertain. According to some scholars, the construction of the castle could refer to the Arborea (between 1236 and 1308) or, considering that from 1282 to 1310 the architect Giovanni Capula was in Sardinia who erected the towers of San Pancrazio, dell’Elefante and dell’Aquila in Cagliari, there is reason to believe that the castle of Sardara is also the work of the same. The name “Monreale” is, according to some, to be attributed to the Aragonese, while others maintain, according to an ancient document, that already in 1309 the castrum of the mountain of Sardara boasted the qualification of “royal”
The castle is mentioned for the first time in 1309 in a document in which it is stated that the fortress, ceasing the concession to the Republic of Pisa, was granted by James II of Aragon to Mariano and Andreotto de Bas of Arborea. In 1324 there is the first attestation of the use of Monreale as a royal residence, as we are reminded by the document relating to the stay of Teresa d’Entença, wife of the Infante Alfonso of Aragon, in the castle after fleeing from Villa di Chiesa. Numerous documents confirm the residential function of the castle, not only military. During the 14th century, in the war against the Catalan-Aragonese, the Judges of Arborea used it to store food supplies, as a prison, and finally as a shelter for the Arborean troops defeated during the battle of Sanluri. In 1412 the castle became part of the County of Quirra, in 1470 it was reconquered by Leonardo Alagon, heir of the Arborea, winner of the battle of Uras, but eight years later it returned to the Quirra, in the territory that takes its name from it, the Barony of Monreale. Later the structure lost its strategic and political role and a change of use ensued and then destruction.
Description
The keep of Monreale (contraction of Mons Regalis) occupies the summit of a relief (275 m above sea level) of singular geological interest, constituting a sort of fossil island, emerging from the Tertiary and Quaternary sediments of the plain. Together with the castles of Marmilla and Arcuentu, in 1309 it was part of the fortified line on the border between the Giudicato of Cagliari and that of Arborea. The fortification of the castle has a circumference of 650 m. Its southern side towards S. Gavino is 200 m. with four towers and the gate called de Santu Baingiu located between the second and third towers. The side that faces west is 120 m. with two towers. To the east there appear to have been barracks and warehouses. The width of the walls is approximately 2 m. The curtains are made of mixed medium-sized stones; the structure, equipped with a well and cistern, had three floors with rooms that overlooked the parade ground. Outside the castle walls on the hill sloping down towards Sardara, a village was settled around a church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, prince of the “Celestial Militia”, who inspired the soldiers of Arborea and benefited from his protection. https://virtualarchaeology.sardegnacultura.it/index.php/it/siti-archeologici/eta-medievale/monreale.
