The necropolis of Thapsos is quite large and is divided into three large areas: north, central and south. It consists of artificial cave tombs dug into the limestone rock that have two types of entrance based on the excavation position: if the tomb was dug from a margin facing the coast therefore on the cliffs sloping towards the sea, it had a long corridor, a dromos, up to the entrance of the cell, if the tomb was located on the rocky base of the plateau the entrance was accessible through a square or rectangular well. Some of the tombs equipped with a dromos had monumentalized facades with the addition of worked limestone blocks arranged to form a trilith, or as in a single case known in Thapsos, a colonnaded facade similar to the tombs of the ancient Bronze Age of the Castelluccio culture. Some well tombs on the plateau show well-defined flattenings on the sides in which there are holes for the housing of probable markers. The interiors of the tombs, typically circular in shape, could be quite large, indicating that they were collective tombs belonging perhaps to individual clans. On the walls they could have funeral beds or niches often decorated with high-relief frames with pointed corners. Some tombs show a stone bench inside at the base, imitating the benches present in the huts, thus demonstrating an evident parallelism between the places of life and death. The tombs of Thapsos were initially investigated by the archaeologist Cavallari and subsequently by Paolo Orsi at the end of the nineteenth century and much later by Brea and Voza. The tombs have returned important materials for the description of this protohistoric culture and especially regarding transmarine contacts. The central sector of the necropolis also consisted of enchytrismòs tombs, or burials inside large amphorae, a sepulchral typology imported from the East.. https://www.siciliafotografica.it/gallery/index.php?/category/1476
