In one of the most uncontaminated and wild stretches of coast on the whole island, made unique by the fascinating and melancholic presence of the ruins of the old mines now abandoned, Cala Domestica opens up, a narrow fjord with transparent waters, wedged between two promontories covered with Mediterranean scrub, which culminates in a beach with dunes of light sand. Until 1940 the cove was used as a port of embarkation for minerals from the nearby Acquaresi mine: a small train (part of the track layout can still be seen) carried the load to the beach where it was loaded onto the small boats that ferried it to Carloforte, a port where larger ships headed for the continent could dock. To protect the strategic port, towards the end of the eighteenth century the Cala Domestica Tower was built on the peninsula that closes the beach to the south. Cylindrical in shape, made of limestone and tuff, the building measures about 12 m in diameter and is about 11 m high. During the Second World War it was used as an observation point: the metal ladder leading to the entrance dates back to that period. The entrance to the tower is not exactly safe due to the general state of the walls and the access ladder.
