The castle was built between the 9th and 10th centuries, at the time of the Hungarian and Saracen invasions, when a wall was erected around the church of San Pietro, enclosing some buildings. This first settlement represented the initial nucleus of the castle, which served as a fortress located between several ricetti in a hilly area. On 9 July 1000, Emperor Otto III of Saxony granted the bishop of Ivrea jurisdiction over the territory surrounding the city, making the castle part of the bishopric.
Over the following centuries, the bishops promoted a series of expansion and fortification works on the castle: in the 11th century, a square-plan tower was built, while in the 12th century the keep was enriched with a new building consisting of two superimposed rooms. Between 1326 and 1346 a new wing was built to the north, characterized by pointed arch windows, and a tower-gate serving as an entrance. At the end of the 14th century, new architectural interventions were carried out that involved the circular towers, inserted in the external walls, and other rooms projecting towards the courtyard area.
In 1888, the restoration began under the direction of Alfredo d’Andrade who had purchased it in 1885. The works were completed by his son Ruy d’Andrade only after the death of the famous architect.
In 1902 it was included in the list of monumental buildings in Italy[3].
In 1991 it was purchased by the Medic company, directed and founded by Dr. Antonio Giodice, who restored it and used it as the headquarters of the Medic company, a laboratory for refresher courses for doctors in new diagnostic technologies and a reception structure (hotel and restaurant) and conference center. The structure also serves as a suggestive backdrop to historical re-enactments, such as the medieval festivals held in June.
In this, as in other manors in the Canavese area, the figure of Arduino, king of medieval Italy, is most evoked. In this case, the name of the sovereign is the same as that attributed to the coffered ceiling that decorates the interior, which comes from the castle of Strambino. There are portraits of characters and animal figures. Inside the castle, to the side of the courtyard, there is a small church dating back to the original building. www.castellodipavone.comhttps://youtu.be/PPTCAlH4oN0?si=dyhi7mvMdz76SeTc
