An exceptional prehistoric heritage of a small village in Marmilla, in central-southern Sardinia, a complex with unique characteristics, to which a museum is linked.
It had a temple function confirmed by the discovery, inside its central room, of a decorated altar in the shape of a nuraghe, a reproduction of which is in the archaeological museum dedicated to the site. The nuragic complex on Mulinu stands on a small hill overlooking the valley of the Rio Mannu, less than a kilometer from Villanovafranca, the center of eastern Marmilla. The complex nuraghe is a superposition of various construction typologies, from the ‘corridor’ to the tholos (false dome) covering. The first structure, made of marl blocks, dates back to the 16th-15th century BC (Middle Bronze Age I), at the same time a village was born around it. In this phase a bastion with a forewall was built, where you will notice corridors and cells. In the 14th century BC a trilobate fortification and a forewall composed of four towers joined by curtain walls were superimposed. Cells and passages were built on the lower level, some rooms (subject to excavations) were built on the upper level. In the third phase, the forewall was strengthened with a fifth tower. One of its rooms with a tholos vault has returned, in the upper layer, late-Punic, Roman-Republican and Final Bronze Age-Early Iron Age finds, in the lower layer, Recent Bronze Age finds. Another similar room has returned early medieval materials. Below the ‘historical’ levels, a slab floor was found with a hearth: fragments from the Final Bronze Age and Iron Age have come to light here.

Su Mulinu was a place of worship from the 14th century BC, as evidenced by two ritual hearths in the central room of the fortress. The rites, perhaps suspended for a few centuries, resumed between the end of the 11th and 9th centuries BC, the period to which the bench-seat and the most extraordinary discovery of the complex date back: a sandstone altar-nuraghe from the early Iron Age (8th century BC): on the top it has a basin for collecting liquids, connected by a canal to a basin, where they were poured. The monument, used for sacrifices and votive offerings, was decorated with four sword hilts (three intact) that supported bronze blades. Other bronze objects with anthropomorphic and animal figures decorated the upper part, perhaps they were linked to the myth of the crescent moon at the base of the mysterious Nuragic cult, which resumed in the Roman age, especially between 50 BC and 150 AD. The materials found in the excavations (still ongoing) are exhibited in the civic archaeological museum on Mulinu, set up in the nineteenth-century former granary hill of Villanovafranca, together with ceramic, metal, glass and stone finds from the surrounding area, which date from the 4th millennium BC to the 3rd century AD. The exhibition shows the development of the complex Nuragic architecture over the course of a millennium (16th-6th century BC) and a scenographic reconstruction of the Nuragic altar.
