Around 1355, the Lord of Milan Bernabò Visconti, a great hunting enthusiast, chose Pandino to build a castle so he could comfortably reside in these places and devote himself to his favorite activity; in fact, our territory at that time was still rich in inhabited woods and game. The building has the typical shape of the Visconti castles of the plains of the time: a square plan with four square corner towers, an internal courtyard with a portico with pointed arches on the ground floor and an upper loggia with square pillars. On the outside, the numerous windows are visible, single-lancet windows on the ground floor, originally intended for the servants, double-lancet windows on the upper floor, reserved for the nobles.
The east side of the lower floor was originally open as a sort of second portico, and was used as a banquet hall.
In the 14th century, the castle was completely decorated in every space, even in the stables now occupied by the library. The paintings, still largely preserved today, consist of various geometric shapes, architectural decorations and everywhere the coats of arms of the lords of the castle, namely the snake of Bernabò Visconti and the ladder, emblem of the family of Bernabò’s wife, Regina della Scala, daughter of the lord of Verona.
Among the few paintings with human figures, St. Anthony the Abbot and St. Christopher stand out, painted on the sides of the former banquet hall to protect the former from the health of the inhabitants of the castle and the latter from sudden deaths; unfortunately, during the 15th century, due to stability problems, it became necessary to add reinforcement arches to each corner of the portico, which went on to partially cover St. Anthony and completely cover St. Christopher.
Again during the 15th century, two defense towers were added to the two entrances of the castle, since in that period the Venetians had become increasingly close to the Pandino territory; the defensive precautions were not enough, since Venice easily took the castle twice, occupying it for only a few years.
After eliminating Bernabò with a coup d’état, his nephew GianGaleazzo became the new lord of Milan, and we know that he also often came to Pandino for hunting. GianGaleazzo’s son, Filippo Maria, was the last Visconti to govern Milan, after him the Sforza family took power, to whom our castle also passed; in particular, Ludovico Maria Sforza, better known as Ludovico il Moro, was count of Pandino from around 1470. After the Moro became duke of Milan, the castle of Pandino passed into the hands of other families, some of whom held it for only a few years.
The last owners were the D’Adda family, who during the 19th century rented the castle, both as a residence and as the headquarters of various activities. In 1947 the municipality managed to purchase the castle and in the 1950s restoration work began. Today the castle houses the municipal offices, the canteen of the dairy school and numerous events.
It is important to underline that our castle is one of the best preserved residences in all of Lombardy, since it is still very similar to its original appearance.
