It is the little church that is located at the entrance to Burcei, consecrated in 1926. Leaving the village, a short distance from the last houses, on the left we find a dirt road. In the middle of this road and the provincial road 125 there is a piece of land from where the statue of Santa Barbara looks at us as powerful as the granite used to create it. Her holy hand is raised to greet the faithful who come from the village to the church to praise her. The church of Santa Barbara is located on the right, admired by the holy eyes of the statue, on the other side of the road in the Santa Barbara Park, where adults and children can find shade, rest and peace to gather after listening to the mass dedicated to the Saint or on any hot summer day. The church of Santa Barbara was completed in 1926, when Don Fresia decided to use some land donated by the Burcerese population, very devoted to the Saint, who had saved the lives of many people, struck by diseases, who went to that place. The church is very simple, with only one room and with the sacristy on the right. On the first Sunday of June, the anniversary of the miracle, the town celebrates Santa Barbara. The celebration begins on Saturday with the “dressing” of the statue for the processions in honor of the Saint. The statue is located in the niche of San Francesco in the church of Santa Maria and is carried in procession to the church of Santa Barbara with the sumptuous ox cart, accompanied by the faithful and the launeddas and accordion players. On Sunday, before mass, a smaller procession takes place around the church of Santa Barbara. For the festival, traditional costumes that come from many villages in Sardinia parade, concerts and other shows are held. On the day of the festival, the whole village gathers to celebrate and almost every year it takes place in “Is Gaianus”, not far from the little church. The festival of Santa Barbara, like that of the patron saint Santa Maria, ends with “Su Cambiamentu”, a ceremony where the outgoing committee hands over the festival to the committee that will take care of it the following year.
